Hopkin (Scottish / American 1832- 1909) Seascape Oil painting on board depicting a two masted sailing ship on dark choppy waters in the foreground with heavy clouds and seashore landscape. Signed "R. Hopkin" lower right. Robert B. Hopkin was the leading painter in mid to late 19th-century Detroit and was recognized during his lifetime. He created over 390 oils and watercolors, including views of the Great Lakes, the local landscape, and views from his travels to Ireland, Scotland, and throughout the U.S. CIRCA: 20th Century. Signed in the lower right corner. Hopkin immigrated to the United States from Scotland in 1843 and settled permanently in Detroit, Michigan. He traveled often and spent the year of 1870 in Chicago. His major decorative accomplishments included the interior of the Detroit Opera House (1869) and the Cotton Exchange in New Orleans (1883). Two pencil sketches on paper include an image of a man sitting on a Pier, looking out at the sailboats on the water, and another image entitled "School Ship" with illegible location and "Near Belfast, June 22nd 1883" also written in pencil at the lower left. Much toning to the first image and some water damage, slight rippling to both. Images are 5 x 3 5/8" and 6 3/4 x 4 5/8" high, in gilded frames with some small losses, 11 1/2 x 11 1/4" and 13 3/4 x 12" high overall. ESTIMATE $200-300
