        • EDNA BOIES HOPKINS Cineraria (Anemones; Purple Zinnias).
          Nov. 02, 2023

EDNA BOIES HOPKINS Cineraria (Anemones; Purple Zinnias).

          Est: $6,000 - $9,000

EDNA BOIES HOPKINS Cineraria (Anemones; Purple Zinnias). Color woodcut on Japan paper, 1915-17. 228x200 mm; 9x7 7/8 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 25-50 (Vasseur cites the highest recorded edition number on any of the known impressions of this subject as "18"). Signed and inscribed "No. 1" in pencil, lower margin. A superb impression of this very scarce woodcut with strong colors. We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 30 years. According to Vasseur, Hopkins (1872-1937) printed each of her color woodcuts, like many other practitioners of this technique in her day, as unique works of art and not an exact image as part of an edition. Furthermore, "The fact that each color in her prints had to be applied and transferred individually by hand may well have encouraged Hopkins to vary the colors she used. Indeed, one author has suggested that Hopkins's prints should more accurately be considered monoprints. Although most printmakers and scholars probably would not agree with this proposition, it is worth noting, because sometimes the colors of like images vary radically. Such color variations are by no means rare in Hopkins oeuvre; in fact, they are to be expected." Vasseur 27.

          EDNA BOIES HOPKINS Honeysuckle.

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

EDNA BOIES HOPKINS Honeysuckle. Color woodcut, circa 1909-13. 280x185 mm; 11x7 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed and inscribed "1" in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this exceedingly scarce woodcut with strong colors. Hopkins (1872-1937) was born in Hudson, Michigan and moved to Chicago after she married at the age of 19. She did not begin practicing art until 1895 when she enrolled in the Cincinnati Art Academy after the death of her husband. She studied there for four years before moving to New York to continue her training at the Pratt Institute under Arthur Wesley Dow where she discovered Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcuts. She subsequently started making prints, and after she married her second husband, James Hopkins, they traveled around the world on their honeymoon, stopping in Japan to study printmaking. They lived in Paris for a decade, before returning to the Midwest with the onset of the first world war. They spent summers at the Provincetown, Massachusetts art colony and she embraced the white line method of woodcuts. She printed each of her color woodcuts, like many other practitioners of this technique in her day, as unique works of art and not exact facsimile images part of an edition. The color inks were applied directly to the woodblocks with brushes and dabbing, like painting on a canvas, and each of the impressions retain a unique character as a result. Vasseur 39.

          Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Hopkins, Edna Boies (American, 1872-1937). "Bud." 1906. Woodcut in color. Artist's stamp, l.r. Signed in pencil, l.l. Exhibited in "Arthur Wesley Dow and His Influence," August 1990 - September 1991. Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University. Image: 11" x 7 1/4". Framed: 21 3/4" x 16 3/4". Provenance From the collection of printmaker Phyllis Cohen. Condition Image near fine. Matted and under glass. The print has been examined out of the frame and in our assessment the image is near fine. It has been placed loose into corner mounts and is not attached to the mat by adhesive or tape. The sheet margins, concealed by the mat, are somewhat darker. There is a light crease at the lower left edge of the image, not readily perceptible when framed. Exhibition label to verso.

          Oct. 29, 2014

EDNA BOIES HOPKINS Mountain Women (Two Women in White on a Hill).

          Est: $15,000 - $20,000

EDNA BOIES HOPKINS Mountain Women (Two Women in White on a Hill). Color woodcut on Japan paper, 1917. 257x230 mm; 10 1/4x9 inches, full margins. Signed and inscribed "No. 10" in pencil, lower margin. A superb impression of this extremely scarce color wodcut. The two women in the woodcut are fellow artists Ethel Mars and her lifelong partner Maud Squire, shown hiking together in Provence. Hopkins had met Mars at the Cincinnati Art Academy around the turn of the century and taught her to make woodcuts. Mars and Squire also became friends in Cincinnati and around 1905-06 moved together to Paris, seeking artistic enrichment and lifestyle freedom. Mars and Squire became part of Gertrude Stein's circle in Paris and were immortalized by Stein's Miss Furr and Miss Skeene, 1908-11. We have found only one other impression of this woodcut at auction in the past 25 years. Vasseur 17.
