Peter Hopkins (New York, 1911 - 1999) Peter Hopkins has been active in New York City for many years as landscape, portrait, and mural painter, illustrator, art educator, and gallery professional. He taught at the Art Students League from 1949 to 1950 and 1975 to 1983; the Moore Institute of Art, Science and Industry from 1949 to 1950; the Cartoonists and Illustrators School 1949 to 1950; the Newark Academy of Art in 1950; the New York-Phoenix School of Design from 1961 to 1972; and Pratt Institute from 1975 to 1977. From 1950 to 1953, he was employed by Richard Kollmar's Little Studio, and from 1953 to 1958, was Assistant Director of the Mortimer Brandt Gallery. Hopkins was born in 1911 to theatrical producer Charles R. Hopkins and his actress wife, Violet Vivian Clarke Hopkins. From 1918 to 1928, during his youth, Peter was taken by his parents on tours of art centers in New York, London, Paris, Florence, Venice, Rome, Kyoto, Seoul and Peiping. In 1927, he enrolled at the Art Students League in New York, (he is now a Life Member) studying with George Bridgman, and later from 1945 to 1950 at the ASL under the G.I. Bill of Rights with Frank DuMond, Kenneth Miller, William McNulty, William Zorach, Frank Reilly, Harry Sternberg, Robert Hale, and Reginald Marsh. He later journeyed 1500 miles into the interior of China by river boat and sedan chair during the Warlord Era, 1934 to 1935, and there was introduced to Chinese ink painting by Prince P'u Ju. During the U.S. Liberation of Capri, Italy in 1944, Hopkins learned about oil painting from Nazi refugees. In 1947, he studied Renaissance painting techniques with Jacques Maroger, retired conservator of paintings at the Louvre.
