              Est: $300 - $600

Extremely rare dedication page from Francis Hopkinson's "Seven Songs for the harpsichord or piano forte" --- which Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791) sent to George Washington (1732 - 1799). The transcript is as follows (the document uses the 'long s' common at the time, but has removed here only for ease of reading): "To His Excellency George Washington, Esquire. Sir, I embrace, with heart-felt satisfaction, every opportuinity that offers of recognizing the personal Friendship that hath so long subsisted between us. The present Occasion allows me to do this in a manner most flattering to my Vanity; and I have accordingly taken advantage of it, by presenting this Work to your Patronage, and honouring it with your Name. It cannot be thought an unwarrantable anticipation to look up to you as seated in the most dignified situation that a grateful People can offer. The universally avowed Wish of America, and Nearness of the Period in which that Wish will be accomplished, sufficiently justify such an Anticipation; from which arises a confident Hope, that the same Wisdom and Virtue which has so successfully conducted the Arms of the United States in Times of Invasion, War, and Tumult, will prove also the successful Patron of Arts and Sciences in Times of national Peace and Prosperity; and that the Glory of America will rise conspicuous under a Government disgnated by the Will, and an Administration founded in the Hearts of the PEOPLE. With respect to the little Work, which I have no the honour to present to your notice, I can only say that it is such as a Lover, not a Master, of the Arts can furnish. I am neither a profess'd Poet, nor a profess'd Musician; and yet venture to appear in those characters united; for which, I confess, the censure of Temerity may justly be brought against me. If these Songs should not be so fortunate as to please the young Performers, for whom they are intended, they will at least not accasion much Trouble in learning to perform them; and this will, I hope, be some Alleviation of their Disappointment. However small the Reputation may be that I shall detrive from this Work, I cannot, I beleive, be refused the Credit of being the first Native of the United States who has produced a Musical Composition. If this attempt should not be too severely treated, others may be encouraged to venture on a path, yet untrodden in America, and the Arts in succession will take root and flourish amongst us. I hope for your favorable Acceptance of this Mark of my Affection and Respect, and have the Honour to be Your Excellency's most obedient, and Most humble Servant, F. Hopkinson. Philadelphia, Nov. 20th, 1788." This very document was used by the PA Society of Colonial Dames of America for a musical performance event held in 1919. From the Francis Hopkinson Family Archives

Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791), among his many achievements, helped create the Great Seal of the United States, the 'unfinished pyramid" image used on US currency, and the Great Seal of New Jersey. Hopkinson, the delegate from New Jersey to the Continental Congress, created the Seal along with Pierre Eugene du Simitiere in 1776. This original sketch, found with the other sketches in lots 216 and 217, depicts an early stage of what obviously became the final design for the seal. Nearly everything is shown and present, but the shield shows only one plow where the final design shows three. Along with the sketch is a framed presentation piece stating that "they have considered the subject and taken the sentiment of several intelligent gentlemen thereon and are of opinion that Francis Hopkinson Esq should be immediately engaged to employ proper persons at Philadelphia to prepare a Silver Seal which is to be round, of 2 1/2 inches Diameter and 3/8ths of an inch thick, and that the arms shall be 3 plows in an Escutcheon, the supporters 'Liberty' and 'Ceres' and the crest a Horse's Head - these words to be engraved in large letters round the arms Viz "The Great Seal of the State of New Jersey" From the Francis Hopkinson Family Archives

Although neither of them are signed, both of these sketches were found alongside the signed piece from lot 216. Presumably done by Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791), but may have been from another member of this artistic family. The first sketch has a mildly psychedelic feel with a sort of nature scene morphing into something resembling an article of clothing. The second shows a very peculiar "person" with something on a utensil in the loose act of eating. There are elements of heraldry, and what looks like a weapon passing through the head of the subject and protruding from the other side. From the Francis Hopkinson Family Archives

Original ink illustration signed and dated 1783 by Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791). The scene, almost certainly the interior of Independence Hall, depicts four animal characters across books and ink quills. There is a turkey with the word "First" written at his feet, next to it a fox or jackal with "Fourth" beneath. On a separate table there is a rodent inside a domed cage labeled "A legal Machine" and finally, a cat standing on hind legs attempting to touch the rodent. The cat is standing on a large book with "Penal Law" written on the spine. The three animals seem to be looking at and focused on the rodent. In 1782, the Education Act of 1695 (part of the Penal Laws) was repealed. This Act was, loosely, a ban on sending children abroad to be educated with religious implications. Document from the Court of Admiralty of the State of Pennsylvania signed by Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791), Stephen Decatur Sr. and George Augustus Delanoe. Stephen Decatur is described here as the Commander of the Ship called the Royal Louis. It was a tradition in the French Royal Navy to name the largest ship Royal Louis after the French monarch. At least six ships bore this name. However, this was in reference to the American Privateer ship Royal Louis. Stephen Decatur Sr. was an American naval captain in the Revolutionary War and later in the Quasi-War, and the father of Stephen Decatur Jr. George Augustus Delanoe was a Captain in the Royal Navy. The document states "Delanoe...saith that he had the command of the Brigantine and left the Island of Antigua bound with Dispatches to the port of New York, that on the Eighteenth Day of August Instant the said Brigantine was on the High Seas on her passage aforesaid captured and taken by the ship called the Royal Louis commanded by Stephen DeCatur Esquire and that at the Time of such Capture the said Vessel was the property of the King of Great Britain or of some subject or Subjects of the said King." On the title page, the name Jacob Duche (1737 - 1798) has been crossed out and replaced by Francis Hopkinson 1757. From Wikipedia: "In 1759, Duche married Elizabeth Hopkinson, the sister of Francis. Duché first came to the attention of the First Continental Congress in September 1774, when he was summoned to Carpenters' Hall to lead the opening prayers of their first session. On July 4, 1776, when the United States Declaration of Independence was ratified, Duché, meeting with the church's vestry, passed a resolution stating that the name of King George III of Great Britain was no longer to be read in the prayers of the church. Duché complied, crossing out said prayers from his Book of Common Prayer, committing an act of treason against England, an extraordinary and dangerous act for a clergyman who had taken an oath of loyalty to the King. On July 9, Congress elected him its first official chaplain. When the British occupied Philadelphia in September 1777, Duché was arrested by General William Howe and detained, underlining the seriousness of his actions. He was later released, and emerged as a Loyalist and propagandist for the British,[3] at which time he wrote a famous letter to General George Washington, camped at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, in which he begged him to lay down arms and negotiate for peace with the British. Suddenly, Duché went from hero of the Revolutionary cause to outcast in the new United States. He was convicted of high treason to the State of Pennsylvania, and his estate was confiscated. In consequence, Duché fled to England." From the Francis Hopkinson Family Archives

This document is a piece of Underground Railroad history. Signed by Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791), the note reads "Exchange 36 Dollars at five Livres Tournois Dollar Numb 456 United States of AMERICA 9th Day of April 1781 At Thirty Days Sight of this Fourth Bill, First, Second and Third not paid, pay to Jonathan Stone or Order, Thirty-six Dollars, in One Hundred and Eighty Livres Tournois, for Interest due on Money borrowed by the United States. To the Commissioner or Commissioners of the United States of America, at Paris." (At this time, the Commissioner of the United States of America at Paris was none other than Benjamin Franklin.) . The party in question for this loan is Jonathan Stone (1751 - 1801). ----- From the West Virginia News & Sentinel: "For more than 200 years the Capt. Jonathan Stone House has stood near what is now Blennerhassett Avenue in Belpre. It was a safe haven for escaped slaves on their way to Canada. The house on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. 'It was built down on the river and moved up here around 1825.' Jonathan Stone, builder of the home, was born in 1751, served in the Continental Army and was a Revolutionary War veteran. He was also a surveyor and moved to Belpre in 1789. Stone constructed Stone's Garrison in 1793 and built the house around 1798. Stone's son, John, became a conductor for the Underground Railroad sometime before 1820. Though the house was moved back from the river by teams of oxen, it was still a hot spot for hiding slaves traveling north toward Canada, said Nancy Sams, president of the Belpre Historical Society. 'The Underground Railroad was neither underground, nor a railroad,' Sams said. 'Aunt Jenny (a famous area conductor) lived over in Marrtown, in what was then Virginia (across the river from the Stone house). They had a series of bells and whistles all along this area, and probably the Ohio River. When Aunt Jenny had passengers for the Stones to help, she'd make some kind of signal. They would have come across and remained hidden until it was safe (to move farther north).' Jan said a room hidden at the top of a slim, steep staircase hid many slaves in need. 'There's a room above the kitchen and that's where they hid the slaves,' she said. Though the room has recently been sealed by the Barretts, it is a reminder of the history behind the house, which they say is an interesting part of living there."
