HOPPE, Emil Otto (1878-1972). A group of over 400 original ...

        Est: $3,000 - $6,000

HOPPE, Emil Otto (1878-1972). A group of over 400 original black and white portrait photographs. [N.p., ca. 1920s]. Various 24mo, 8vo, and 4to sizes. Some photos trimmed to have circular margins. Photos have ink stamps or markings on versos. Some occasional rubbing, mild wear. Generally, very good. Photos are stored in file folders with the subject’s names written on them in an unknown hand. This collection mainly features portraits of famous women of the time as well as fashion photography. Some of the subjects include: Doris Keane, Malvina Longfellow, Lillan McCarthy, Colleen Moore, Arthur Machen, and many more. Hoppe was born into a prominent German banking family, where he was expected to continue his family’s banking tradition, but this left him unfulfilled. When he was transferred from Munich to the London branch of the bank, he eventually met well-known photographer J. C. Warburg (1867-1931) who introduced Hoppe to the myriad possibilities of photography. Hoppe soon bought his first camera and embarked on a storied career of a celebrated art photographer.

E.O. Hoppé's photographs of Germany at Work 1930

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Heading: (Modernism) Author: Hoppé, E. O. Title: Deutsche Arbeit. Bilder vom Wiederaufstieg Deutschlands. Place Published: Berlin Publisher:Im Verlag Ullstein Date Published: [1930] Description: Illustrated with 92 striking sepiatone photogravures depicting Germany's heavy industry and manufacturing sites and workers. 27.5x22 cm (10¾x8½"), grey cloth backed black paper boards, cover lettering in copper gilt, spine lettering in white. First Edition. Rare volume by one of the most important photographers of his era. Homage to Germany's industrial workers and their contribution to Germany's "rebirth" after WWI. Includes appendix with descriptions of photographs. Ownership marks on front free endpaper. Trained as a banker, E.O. Hoppé became increasingly enamored with photography, and in 1907 jettisoned his commercial career and opened a portrait studio. Within a few years, E.O. Hoppé was the undisputed leader of pictorial portraiture in Europe. To say that someone has a "household name" has become a cliché, yet in Hoppé's case the phrase is apt. Rarely in the history of the medium has a photographer been so famous in his own lifetime among the general public. It is difficult to think of a prominent name in the fields of politics, art, literature, and the theatre who did not pose for his camera."
