      Thomas Lyle Hornbrook (1780-1850) British, Leading marine painter of Plymouth school; became official artist to H.R.H. Duchess of Kent and her daughter the Princess Victoria (Queen in 1837) about 1833 after their visit to Plymouth. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1836 and 1844. Examples U.S. Naval Academy - Annapolis National Maritime Museum - Greenwich Waiting Gallery - Plymouth." Title: Shipping in The Thames Estuary. Signed on bottom right hand corner. Provenance documentation includes two handwritten biographies, a book page depicting the piece with title and details, and a handwritten description of the works exhibition history and significance of the paintings setting. Also seen on inverse, a Sotheby's Sussex auction sticker. Condition: Some craquelure visible across the canvas, appropriate for pieces age. A six inch long hairline scratch through the white sailed ship has been retouched, lightly visible to the naked eye. Signed oil painting in very good condition, framed. Frame Dimensions: 22.5X29.5 inches Image: 24.5X17 inches.

      Thomas Lyde Hornbrook (British, c.1808-1855) Two English frigates, Pique and Castor, at speed in a stiff breeze in 1835 oil on canvas, signed and dated 1840 and titled 'Pique & Castor 1835' to spar lower right, in original gilt foliate bordered frame 16 1/2 x 23in. (42 x 58.5cm.) * Provenance: Purchased by the vendor's late husband from the well known collector and historian of early maritime painting, Frank Cockett in 1983, with original and copy correspondence relating to the purchase. ** Condition: Older relining which remains even and stable. Some craquelure visible across the canvas, with a concentration towards the corners of the underlying stretcher and one 'bullseye' shaped area of craquelure above centre mast of left hand ship. Paint appears stable. Period frame. Examined under UV - retouching to horizontal stretcher line to top margin and lighter vertical retouched lines to stretcher lines to sides. Three other diagonal retouched scratches to sky - (these are all visible without UV to the naked eye in normal light). Some small craquelure and other tiny retouches in a few places to sky. Lower half of painting (ships & sea) have very little retouching, with just a few tiny retouches to sea. Would benefit from removal of the older retouches, cleaning and expert retouching by a skilled restorer.
