Earl Horter Etching & Aquatint [Lights + Shadows]. Signed and dated E. Horter '32 in pencil lower right. Titled in pencil lower center. Measures 10 x 11.25 inches image size and 13 x 16 inches sheet size. Unframed and mounted to a thin cardboard. Provenance: Estate collection of William Greenbaum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Proprietor of William Greenbaum Fine Prints. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. We will charge for labor to pack and process based on actual time it takes, actual cost of materials used to pack and actual shipper charges that will include insurance and signature required. We generally use USPS and Fed Ex and compare the pricing between the two. Books maximum box size will be 14x14x14 inch or equivalent and will be shipped USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. EARL HORTER (1883-1940) Grand Central Terminal / The Gateway to a Continent. 1927. Lithograph poster. 102¾x68 cm, 40½26¾ inches; Latham Litho. & Ptg. Co., Long Island City. The interior of the Main Concourse in New York City's Grand Central Terminal, looking east. In the background, on the East Balcony, is a model of the DeWitt Clinton, the first steam powered locomotive to operate in New York State, and its three carriages; it ran from 1831 to 1833 and was then scrapped. The model was built by the New York Central Railroad for display at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial and then was showcased at the Columbian Exposition (World's Fair) in Chicago in 1893. In 1920, it was installed in Grand Central Terminal. Since 1934 the model has resided at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. New York City architecture history buffs will notice that there is not yet a stairway leading up to the East Balcony; this was only added when the station was redesigned in the 1990s. Earl "Bill" Earle Horter (1881 - 1940) Watercolor and graphite on paper, signed lower right, piece measures 5 x 8.5 inches and 10 x 13.5 inches w/frame. Printmaker Earl Horter, born in 1881 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, was known for his realistic etchings and aquatints of urban scenes, though he was also an illustrator and painter. As a teenager, he engraved stock certificates. He was essentially self-taught, though he did take an etching class when he moved to New York City in 1903 to work for an advertising agency. Horter had a one-man show in 1916 in New York City at the Frederick Keppel and Company gallery. He was given the exhibition by Carl Zigrosser, later the first Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Museum of Modern Art. Horter was back in Philadelphia in 1917, where he would remain until his death in 1940. He worked there as art director for the N. W. Ayer advertising firm from 1917-1923. Horter was a member of the Society of Illustrators. He exhibited at the Pan American Exposition in 1915 in San Francisco, California; the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; and the Philadelphia Print Club's National Exhibition

Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, one into upper image; sharp horizontal creases with minor abrasions in margins and image; small, unobtrusive stain in upper image; reds bright. He was a friend of Carles, as well as other artists and collectors such as Leopold Stokowski, conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra; Franklin Watkins; S. S. White; and Carroll Tyson. Horter turned a Philadelphia brownstone into a studio and gallery to house his collection, aided by Paul Cret, the designer of the The Barnes Foundation and Rodin Museum. By 1931, the artist would begin selling his collection due to financial need brought about by the Depression. Horter was also a teacher in Philadelphia at the Stella Elkins Tyler School of Art; Graphic Sketch Club (now the Fleisher Art Memorial); and the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts). In 1998, the Philadelphia Museum of Art put on an exhibition, Mad for Modernism: Earl Horter and His Collection, assembling once again many of the major works of art that comprised the artist's collection. The sheet is mounted around all four edges to the matboard, preventing the edges from being fully examinated. Remnants of tape are present on the edges verso, remnants of previous mounting. Frame: 23 1/4 x 27 1/4 x 1 1/4 in.

The sheet with heavy surface soiling and toning around the extreme edges. There are also occasional tears around the extreme edges. These are obscured by the mat when framed. Two small tears are present at top left and top right. A brown series of lines are present at bottom center which may be surface soiling. The sheet is unevenly trimmed around the four edges. The sheet is mounted to the matboard twice along the top edge and once along the bottom. Frame: 23 5/8 x 30 1/4 x 1 in. 2) Fair to poor overall condition. The sheet is heavily toned and has surface soiling in the margins underneath the matboard. Light foxing is present throughout the sheet. The sheet is mounted to the matboard twice along the top and once along the bottom. Frame: 19 x 21 1/2 x 1 in.
