Gayle Porter Hoskins (1887 - 1962) "The Day Herder" (Featured On Cover Of Western Story, May 10, 1930) Oil on Canvas. Gayle Porter Hoskins was born in Brazil, Indiana. When he was five years old, his family moved to Denver, Colorado, where he grew up around horses he would later paint. Hoskins worked for the "Denver Post" newspaper as a cartoonist when only fourteen. After the death of his mother, when the family moved to Chicago, Hoskins studied with Thomas Wood Stevens, Charles Francis Browne, John Vanderpoel and Frank Phoenix at the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois. In 1907, he became a mural designer for the Marshall Field and Company Department Store, and "Red Book Magazine" published his first illustrations. He moved to Wilmington, Delaware in 1907, at the invitation of well-known painter-illustrator Howard Pyle to study with him there until Pyle left for Italy in 1910. Hoskin's illustrations for calendars, magazine covers and book jackets soon appeared in major American magazines. By 1918, Hoskins was a prominent illustrator. He became best known for his outdoor and Western subjects. As the Pulp magazines evolved, Hoskins’ work was especially well suited to the requirements of the Western covers and he was associated with the publishers Street & Smith for many years. Hoskins was a founding member, in 1928, of the Wilmington Academy of Art where he taught life drawing, illustration, studies from the antique, costume sketching, and composition. He was also a co-founder, with Frank Schoonover, of the Wilmington Sketch Club; as well as a founding member of the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, where he frequently exhibited. Gayle Porter Hoskins Delaware/ Indiana/ Colorado/ Chicago, (1887-1962) Slim's Girl in Snake's Power (featured on cover of Western Story, May 23, 1931) oil on canvas signed lower right, notated verso, in a custom antler frame. This painting served as 1 of a series of 27 original works by Hoskins that were featured on the covers of _Street & Smith's Western Story Magazine_ that ran from January through July 1931. (Hoskins also made individual paintings as illustrations for other covers of _Western Story_ in other years too.) These 27 paintings tell the chronological and highly adventurous story of a man named Slim and his encounters with a villain called Snake over the course of one day (the series was aptly called "A Cowboy's Day"), and this painting served as #20 (of the 27 'frames') and was called "Slim's Girl in Snake's Power." In this work we see Snake has kidnapped a young woman and is leading her away on horseback down a steep ravine. In other works from that series, Slim's 'Girl' is revealed to be named Rita, and she appears in 11 of those 1931 covers with both Slim and/or Snake. This is a classic and original painting of life in the American West, and perhaps due to its idealistic nature allowing escapism for most of the rest of the nation, Western Story Magazine become incredibly popular across the country during those years of the Great Depression. (Street & Smith also selected 20 of the 27 cover paintings to be released as a series of prints--but the series did not include this rare piece.)

Depicting hunter with capsized boat with gun overhead with rig of mallard decoys, the other fisherman aside marsh in boat. Sight size 34" x 24" Painter, illustrator Gayle Porter Hoskins was born July 20, 1887 in Brazil, Indiana, but he would become associated with Delaware. His subjects included dramatic episodes from American history, the life of the cowboy, as well as formal portraits. An artistically precocious youngster, Hoskins worked for the "Denver Post" newspaper as a cartoonist when only fourteen. Three years later, in 1904, his mother died. The Delaware Museum of Art, Wilmington, features the Gayle Hoskins Collection of paintings, photographs, clippings, family memorabilia and magazines that Hoskin's illustrated including "Good Housekeeping", "Harper's Weekly", "Harper's Monthly", "Liberty", "Cosmopolitan" and many others.
