  • Joel Hotchkiss (Born 1949) American "Ascent" Mobile
    Mar. 29, 2025

Joel Hotchkiss (Born 1949) American "Ascent" Mobile

    Est: $250 - $400

Joel Hotchkiss (Born 1949) American "Ascent" Brushed Aluminum Mobile. Brushed etchings with black highlights. Signed and dated 2001.  A striking combination of black metal shapes and brushed aluminum in ascending formation. The silver and black complements a contemporary motif with taller ceiling spaces. This mobile is sleek and precise and moves in a serpentine mode of one vane following the other as the air currents play across the surface of each vane. Size: Approximately 40 x 49 in. Comes apart.  #6798 Joel Hotchkiss, born in 1949 in Torrington, Connecticut, was raised in Sherman, a small New England town. Growing up in a creative family, he pursued a career in art, earning a BFA in Advertising Design and Communication from Pratt Institute in 1971. After working as an Art Director in Boston, he discovered his passion for kinetic art in the mid-1970s, creating mobiles in his apartment. Seeking artistic freedom, he moved to Oakland, California, dedicating himself to mobile-making. In the early 1980s, he honed his craft at Kinetic Objects in Marin County, mastering welding and metalworking. Each week, he delivered his mobiles to Don Conard's Gallery in San Francisco, turning his passion into a sustainable career. For over 40 years, Joel has explored the sculptural discipline of mobiles, emphasizing balance, motion, and composition. His works enhance interior and exterior spaces and are sold in galleries and museum stores nationwide, including SF MOMA and the Guggenheim Museum. Today, he works with his wife Sandra and a small team at their studio in West Stockbridge, MA. His full collection is available at www.artmobiles.com.

Joel Hotchkiss (Born 1949) American, Entourage Mobile Black and Painted Copper

    Est: $250 - $400

Joel Hotchkiss Entourage Mobile in Black and Copper. Signed and dated 2019.  From artmobiles.com: The Entourage in Black with painted Copper is a dramatic design resembling oriental fans reaching out in random formation. The Entourage hanging mobile has a calm, majestic style all its own. The painted-copper aluminum triangles resemble distant mountains as they rise up through the mobile. The black and copper motif works well in a contemporary living space. One attachment is required...then it's ready to hang. For interiors only. Condition: Masking tape was on copper pieces and pulled off some of the paint.  Size: Approximately 41 x 52 in. #6800  Joel Hotchkiss, born in 1949 in Torrington, Connecticut, was raised in Sherman, a small New England town.
