After JEAN-ANTOINE HOUDON (Versailles, 1741 - Paris, 1828); 20th century. "Diana hunter". Patinated bronze and marble pedestal "verde antico". It shows wear in the patina. Signed. Measurements: 62,5 x 25 x 36 cm. In this sculpture, the sculptor shows us Diana in her invocation of hunter goddess. She is represented in a moment of action and movement, but. The goddess appears completely naked, accompanied only by her bow and an arrow that she holds in one of her hands. Jean-Antoine Houdon was a French sculptor, a leading figure of neoclassicism in his country. He stood out in his portraits by the search for individual character, which brought him closer to pre-Romanticism. A disciple of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and Lemoyne, in 1764 he moved to Rome to complete his training. He devoted himself mainly to portraits, beginning the series with one of Diderot, in terracotta, followed by those of Mirabeau, D'Alembert, Molière, Voltaire, Rousseau and Franklin. The latter suggested to him the idea of traveling to the United States to portray Washington. Houdon arrived on the American continent in 1785 and, in addition to several busts of the president, he created the statue currently on display in the Capitol. During the French Revolution, he painted the faces of Necker, Lafayette and Napoleon. Also noteworthy is his elegant Diana the Huntress (1776), in the classicist style. The patina is worn.

Italian school, ca. 1820. After JEAN-ANTOINE HOUDON (Versailles, 1741 - Paris, 1828). Bust of "Diana of Versailles". Carrara marble. Apocryphal signature. Measurements: 73 x 47 x 20 cm. The classicist sculptor that concerns us reproduces faithfully in this bust in Carrara marble the Roman model of Diana, a copy of the Greek original that represented the Greek goddess of hunting Artemis. The Roman copy, known as Diana the Huntress or Diana with Hind, is preserved in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The bust shown here focuses on the beautiful face and the folds of the peplum that drape around the turgid breasts, as well as the headdress with diadem and the waves of the hair gathered in a bun. The copy in the art gallery shows the goddess full-length, in movement, with her left hand resting on the antlers of a small deer and her right hand on her quiver. The authorship of the original statue was long attributed to Leocares, although Praxiteles has also been proposed as the author of the Greek bronze. The neoclassical sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon made several versions of the goddess Diana. The bust in question is based on Houdon's marble Diana preserved in the National Gallery in London. It dates from 1778, and a waning quarter moon adorns her head. Along with the bow and arrow, the moon is an attribute of the Roman goddess (the Greek Artemis), the goddess of the hunt being a lunar divinity. Likewise, the moon is an emblem of chastity. The feminine features convey a powerful and haughty temperament, both in the original and in the excellent version shown here, also made in white marble. Diana's turgid breasts are exposed naked and her head is turned to her right side, gazing into the distance. Her kinky hair is gathered with the crescent-shaped comb, her emblem. A full-length Diana by Houdon (Diana the Huntress, 1776) is preserved in the Louvre Museum. Jean-Antoine Houdon was a French sculptor, a leading figure of the neoclassicism of his country. He stood out in his portraits by the search for individual character, which brought him closer to pre-Romanticism. A disciple of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and Lemoyne, in 1764 he moved to Rome to complete his training. Plaster 41 x 31 x 17 cm This interesting object represents the intermediate phase between the plaster sketch and the marble creation of a sculpture. The portrait was covered with dots so it can be translated into marble. Two pieces of marble are fixed on a surface to indicate the material of the final piece.  This marble bust was created by Houdon in 1780 and presented at the Salon. For comparison, see the plaster one owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, also with dots for the transposition into marble and of dubious attribution.

Measurements: 23 x 12,5 x 9,5 cm. Jean-Antoine Houdon was a French sculptor, a leading figure of French Neoclassicism. His portraits were notable for their search for individual character, which brought him close to pre-Romanticism. A pupil of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and Lemoyne, he moved to Rome in 1764 to complete his training. He devoted himself chiefly to portraiture, beginning the series with a portrait of Diderot in terracotta, followed by those of Mirabeau, D'Alembert, Molière, Voltaire, Rousseau and Franklin. The latter suggested to him the idea of travelling to the United States to portray Washington. Houdon arrived on the American continent in 1785 and, in addition to several busts of the president, produced the statue now on display in the Capitol. During the French Revolution, he painted the faces of Necker, Lafayette and Napoleon.

Jean Antoine Houdon, "Louise Brongniart", marble version c. 1780 with catalogue "Meisterwerke aus baden-württembergischen Privatbesitz" (illustrated and described there), Staatsgalerie Stuttgart 1958/59 Jean-Antoine Houdon, 1741 Versailles - 1828 Paris, French sculptor of classicism, here: Portrait bust of the young daughter of Houdon's friend, the architect Alexandre Théodore Brongniart, the builder of the Paris Stock Exchange. She is holding her head at an angle towards her right shoulder, her full hair combed back and wrapped around her back with a ribbon. The block below the smoothed bust with the arm attachments has been left embossed, marble, height 38 cm. Provenance: Former collection Frhr. v. Miltitz, Schloss Siebeneichen near Meissen "Several marble versions of this bust exist - closely related to the example in the National Gallery in Washington, which, like the terracotta model in the Louvre, was probably created in the 1980s" (text by the Staatsgalerie, Washington). The present work was exhibited there in 1958/59. About the artist: Jean-Antoine Houdon became known for his numerous statues and portrait busts in the late 18th century. In Houdon's work, the transition from representative to artistic, motif-based sculpture can be clearly traced. His works are exhibited in famous museums such as the Louvre in Paris, the Liebighaus in Frankfurt am Main, the Bode Museum in Berlin, the Musée Fabre in Montpellier and the Hermitage in St Petersburg, as well as in the Ducal Museum in Gotha, which houses the largest collection of his early works. He worked in France, Germany, Russia, Italy and the United States and was considered the most successful portrait sculptor of his time. He knew better than almost any other contemporary sculptor how to capture the fine features of his models and mould their character in marble.

31 1/2" tall. 8 7/8" long, 7 1/8" wide. Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741 - 1828) was active/lived in France. Jean Antoine Houdon is known for Neo-classical portrait bust and statue sculpture. Prominent in France during the Enlightenment period of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Jean-Antoine Houdon was a neo-classical sculptor, especially noted for his marble portrait busts and statues. His subjects included Americans Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Robert Fulton, and among his French subjects were Denis Diderot, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Louis XVI and Napoleon Bonaparte. For King Louis, he did numerous statues for the gardens of Versailles. Houdon was a continuous exhibitor at the French Salon, and works included many of the above mentioned personages as well as Prince Henry of Prussia, Catharine of Russia, Voltaire, the playwright Moliere and Marshal de Tourville. Houdon was born in Versailles in 1714. His artistic talent was apparent from the time he was young, and at age 12, he enrolled in the Ecole Royale de Sculpture where he was a student of sculptor Michel Ange Slodtz (1705-1764). In 1761, at the age of 20, Houdon received a Prix de Rome, which was a scholarship sponsored and paid for by the King of France for art students to study at The Academy of France in Rome. He stayed in Italy for ten years, and there much delighted Pope Clement XIV and many other people with his statue of St. Bruno, which Houdon did for the church of St. Maria degli Angeli. Although receiving the Prix de Rome brought him public recognition and the duration provided some excellent exposure to Italian art, scholars indicate that he was not particularly influenced by either the Renaissance or Classical works. However, tangible evidence of some of that influence was the sculpture he titled Morpheus that he sent to the French Salon in 1771. That same year, because of the skill he had shown with Morpheus, and with entries two years earlier that were busts of Catharine II, Diderot and Prince Galitzin, Houdon was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts (painting and sculpture), one of the five academies of the Institute de France, a society of learned persons who set aesthetic standards. In 1778, he became a Professor at the Académie and has been described as being a very active teacher. During the French Revolution, he was censored as a bourgeois because of his association with Louis XVI, but he was not imprisoned. Under the French Consulate, the government between 1799 and 1804, and the French Empire, 1804-1814, when Napoléon took over, Houdon regained his former stature. He executed architectural reliefs, did a statue of Cicero for the Senate, did portrait busts of Napoleon and his wife Josephine, and received the Legion of Honour. In 1785, at the invitation of Benjamin Franklin, America's Minister to France, Houdon traveled with Franklin to America to Virginia, where he visited Mount Vernon to model George Washington, who four years later would be elected President of the United States. From sittings, Houdon made wet-clay life models and a plaster life mask, which later were used, not only by Houdon in Paris for his portrait bust of Washington but for many sculpture works of Washington. Among these Washington subjects are the standing figure statue in the state capitol building in Richmond commissioned by the Virginia General Assembly; many variations of a portrait busts, and a statue in the Vermont State House depicting him in a toga as the Roman Consul Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. Jean-Antoine Houdon died in Paris July 16, 1828, and is buried in Montparnasse Cemetery.

It dates from 1778, and a waning moon adorns her head. Along with the bow and arrow, the moon is an attribute of the Roman goddess (the Greek Artemis), the goddess of the hunt being a lunar deity. The moon is also an emblem of chastity. The female features convey a powerful and haughty temperament, both in the original and in the excellent version shown here, also executed in white marble. Diana's turgid breasts are exposed bare and her head is turned to her right side, gazing into the distance. Her kinky hair is tied back with the crescent-shaped comb, her emblem. The Louvre Museum houses a full-length Diana by Houdon (Diana the Huntress, 1776).
