Charles Howard Hodges, Duke of York Bildnis des Duke of York in Uniform vor leicht hügeliger Landschaft, unter der Darstellung betitelt „Royal Highness the Duke of York“ Mezzotintoradierung, 1791, in der Platte unten rechts signiert „Engraved by C Hodges“ und links bezeichnet „Painted by J. Hoppner Portrait Painter to the Prince of Wales“ im unteren Bereich weiterhin Verlagsangabe mit Datierung „1791“, geringe Erhaltungsmängel, hinter Glas gerahmt, Darstellungsmaße ohne Schrift ca. 62 x 45,5 cm. Künstlerinfo: engl. GOUACHE ON PAPER - 'The Emblazonment' by Charles Houghton Howard (NJ/CA/UK, 1899-1978), initialed lr & dated '48, Hirschl & Adler, NYC & Campbell-Thiebaud, SF labels verso. Painted in London, this is a fine example of Howard's signature biomorphic abstraction. His paintings were included in the landmark exhibition by the influential art dealer Julien Levy in 1932 that introduced European surrealism to the United States. Man Ray and Joseph Cornell were the only other ex-pat Americans in the show. In grey painted domed frame, matted, under plexi. OS: 25 1/2" x 33". SS: 14 1/2" x 22". Very good condition.

Charles Howard (1899-1978) Winter Painting Oil on canvas 91,5cm x 183cm Provenance: Kasmin Gallery, No. 39 Born in New Jersey, Howard studied at the University of California. Initially a mural painter, (Edward Wadsworth's designs in the de la Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, 1936) he exhibited with the British Surrealist Group at the first London Surrealist Exhibition of the same year. In 1939 having experienced continental travel and a period in Paris under the influence of Jean Helion, he settled in London and had a show of abstract pictures at Guggenheim Jeune Gallery. After an absence, Howard returned to Britain in 1946, was given a retrospective in 1956 at the Whitechapel Art Gallery becoming a British citizen in 1963.
