Note: Newton Reeve Howard was a New Orleans painter known for his serene landscapes of the marshes and bayous of South Louisiana. An avid duck hunter, fisherman and naturalist, Howard’s paintings evoke the calm solitude he found during countless hours of paddling through the marshes near Lafitte, Avery Island and many other swampy settings of the region. Often recognized by New Orleans residents as the architect of Monkey Hill, a beloved city landmark located in the Audubon Zoo, Howard graduated from the Tulane University School of Architecture and was subsequently employed by the Federal Works Progress Administration to oversee improvements to the zoo during the Depression. After having difficulty finding work as an architect, Howard decided to embrace his lifelong love of painting and drawing and studied at the Chicago Institute of Art. When he returned to New Orleans, he joined Fitzgerald Advertising, where he served as the agency’s art director and designed regional and national campaigns for companies including Brown’s Dairy and Tabasco. Described by those who knew him as a stoic gentleman who captivated many with a quiet charm and intellect, Howard painted countless oil, acrylic and watercolor works which emphasized where the bayou waters met the horizon, broken only by a slow-moving shrimp trawler or the flutter of bird wings over the marsh. The painting offered here perfectly captures the artist’s minimalist style and sense of quiet reflection. Newton Reeve Howard (American/Louisiana, 1912-1984), "Tears of Christ", 1979, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 14 in. x 18 in., in a period frame. PLEASE NOTE: Howard was a 1929 graduate of the Tulane University School of Architecture. Finding it difficult to obtain work as an architect during the Depression, and having had an interest in art since childhood, he enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago. He eventually returned to his native New Orleans with the Works Progress Administration, serving as the supervisor for the construction of Monkey Hill in Audubon Park. During WWII, Howard joined the Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific. Inspired by his years in the Pacific, Howard created a number of paintings and drawings of the region and its people; the Smithsonian Institution recently purchased seven of these works. Newton Reeve Howard's evocative and refined views of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou have been much admired, particularly amongst private and institutional collectors within the New Orleans arts community.
