William Henry Howe American, 1844-1929 The Old Mill at Bussum, Holland, 1897

        Est: $1,000 - $1,500

William Henry Howe American, 1844-1929 The Old Mill at Bussum, Holland, 1897 Signed William H. Howe and dated 1897 (ll); inscribed J. R. Meeker on a fragmentary label affixed to the stretcher Oil on board 11 3/4 x 17 7/8 inches In the 1880s, William Henry Howe travelled to Holland in the company of other painters. The sojourn inspired his interest in pastoral subjects, and Howe commenced his cattle paintings at that time; he eventually earned the moniker Mr. Howe Cow. The fragmentary inscription on the reverse suggests that the present work was painted in Bussum, once a large heathland in North Holland with many small farms, sheep pens and forests. C
