    WILLIAM SAMUEL HOWITT (BRITISH c. 1756-1822) STRIATED MONKEY signed Howitt in the watercolour watercolour 25 x 19cm; 10 x 7 1/2in together with another signed watercolour, thought to be of Thorold's Deer from Tibet by the same hand both unframed (2) The present work is illustrated in reverse in Edward Griffith's book, General and Particular Descriptions of the Vertebrated Animals, arranged conformably to the Modern Discoveries and Improvements in Zoology, London 1821, p. 97 Iolo Williams said, [Howitt] was particularly good at deer, which he drew with special delicacy, but he also did many monkeys, cattle, birds, fish and so forth.     Samuel Howitt,  British c.1765-1822-  Seven Studies of birds;  each pencil and watercolour on paper, six signed 'Howitt', four indistinctly inscribed in pencil, 19 x 12.9 cm. and smaller, seven (7).  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 22 November 1995, lot 1. (part lot).  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Howitt made his name as an animal and sporting artist, particularly depicting hunting and equestrian scenes. He illustrated a number of publications, including Peter Beckford's 'Thoughts on Hunting' (1798) and John Turton's 'The Angler's Manual' (1808), as his own titles,  such as 'A New Work of Animals' (1811) and 'Groups of Animals' (1811).  Howitt produced a number of ornithological studies like the present works - indeed, one of his major patrons was Walter Fawkes (1769-1825) of Farnley Hall, Yorkshire for whom he executed studies to be included in the family's 'Ornithological Collection' albums, whilst another patron was the naturalist and collector William Bullock (c.1773-1849).

Merke, somewhat spotted, mount aperture 35.7 x 47 cm (14 x 18 1/2 ins), framed and glazed (58 x 67.5 ins), together with: Salt (Henry), View Near the Village of Asceriah, in Abyssinia, London: William Miller, May 1st 1809, colour aquatint with hand-colouring, engraved by Daniel Havell, lightly toned, a little rubbed in places, few minor creases or closed tears, small dampstain towards right edge, mount aperture 36.5 x 54.2 cm (14 3/8 x 21 3/8 ins), framed and glazed (61 x 75.5 ins), (neither examined out of frames) QTY: (2) NOTE: First item: this is plate 1 from the second edition of Oriental Field Sports, published in 1819 by Edward Orme. The plates were produced from watercolours completed by Howitt and based on original sketches made by Williamson during his time serving in the British Army in India. Second item: this is plate 17 from Twenty Four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egypt, published by William Miller in 1809.
