Cornelius Hoyer. Miniature portrait of a walking married couple, c. 1795-1800

    Est: kr3,000 - kr4,000

Cornelius Høyer (1741-1804). Miniature portrait of a couple walking. Gray wash on ribbed paper, heightened with white. Unsigned. Approx. 1795-1800. Diam. 10 cm. (14 cm.) Literature: Torben Holck Colding. 'Cornelius Høyer'. The Society for the Publication of Scriptures on Danish Monuments, Gads Forlag 1961. Corresponding miniature included in Holck Colding's index of works, no. 451, page 288 ('Unknown man and young lady, walking'), depicted as the illustration index's fig. 240. The image comes from Emil Glückstadt's auction II (Winkel & Magnussen 17), 26 Nov. 1923, catalog no. 305, here described as 'Portrait of the painter Jens Juel with his wife, walking in a garden'. Bought by art dealer Schick Nielsen for DKK 1,025 in commission for an unnamed buyer. Despite a modest upbringing, Høyer achieved a brilliant career from the 1760s onwards at several European princely courts - e.g. by the Swedish and the French - and his international reputation earned him customers among Europe's leading collectors and art connoisseurs.Høyer contested the post of Danish court miniature painter in the years 1769-1804.
