        Thomas Hoyne (IL,MA,1924-1989) gouache painting

        Est: $4,750 - $6,250

ARTIST: Thomas Maclay Hoyne (Illinois, Massachusetts, 1924 - 1989) NAME: River Landscape YEAR: 1970 MEDIUM: gouache on board CONDITION: Very good. SIGHT SIZE: 17 x 22 inches / 43 x 55 cm FRAME SIZE: unframed (In-House framing available) SIGNATURE: lower right CATEGORY: old antique vintage painting for auction sale online AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US SKU#: 122433 US Shipping $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Hoyne served his naval career in the Pacific Theater as a gunnery officer on the L. S. T. 48. This experience was undoubtedly crucial to the development of his superior knowledge and feel for the sea. Not only did Mr. Hoyne possess a thorough understanding of the anatomy of oceans ' of currents, waves, wind, and the enormous weight of water; he also had an instinctive sense of the poetry of the sea. His point of view was quite unlike that of any other marine painter, and he developed a distinctive, recognizable style and identity all his own.Mr. Hoyne's interest in the romance of the great sailing and fishing vessels began during his childhood when he spent summers at his grandmother's cottage in Ogunquit on the southeast coast of Maine. He became familiar with the Cape Ann/Gloucester area of Massachusetts, and in 1938, he saw the movie "Captains Courageous." The subject of the film was the Gloucester fishing fleet, and he was enthralled. He became immersed in the lore and traditions of the New England fishing industry, and began drawing the schooners and building models of fishing boats. This intense interest in the history and romance of these ships took him up and down the East Coast, visiting historical societies, museums and shipyards. He befriended shipbuilders, captains, crew members and historians. His travels aboard ships furnished him with invaluable research, and imbued his paintings with depth and incredible accuracy.Early in his painting career, he was introduced by his grandmother to the legendary American marine painter Gordon Grant. He visited Grant's studios in Gloucester and New York, and was greatly impressed by his work and his knowledge of ships. Once out of the navy, Mr. Hoyne returned home and began working as an illustrator in Chicago. He specialized in landscapes, antique airplanes and cars and vintage ships. His work also included portraits of 16 American winners of the Nobel Prize for Science.Eventually he turned his attention exclusively to sailing vessels. In 1983 he was awarded the Rudolph J. Schaefer Award at the Mystic International, an honor given to the artist whose work best documents our maritime heritage. Several of his dramatic paintings were made into prints, and most editions have sold out. Occasionally, a print comes on to the secondary market; any rare Hoyne print is eagerly sought by collectors.

The French fishing interests were well established along the coasts of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia by the 17th century and they literally dominated the banks until conclusion of Queen Ann's war in 1713. According to Raymond McFarland in "A History of the New England Fisheries," the native Indians of the Eastern coast of North America told John Cabot in 1497 the Basque word for codfish (baccalaor) which could mean the French came to Newfoundland before Columbus came to America. The McManus-designed knockabout Rhodora was launched from Essex in 1910. She was named for a flowering shrub of the heath family and worked out of Gloucester for 30 years as a dory trawler, seiner, shacker and halibuter before being sold to Newfoundland interests. Renamed Mettamora after a former Boston schooner, she was lost at Point Ridge, Newfoundland in 1953 while hauling barreled oil."

Other Notes: The following lot of 25 paintings by Thomas Hoyne depicts automobiles from 1901-1937. The automobiles illustrated in the paintings were part of the William F. Harrah (Harrah's Casino) collection. By the time of his death in 1978, Bill Harrah had assembled the largest and most historically significant collection of antique cars in the world. In total, his collection reached approximately 1,400 vehicles. Most of his automobiles were sold in the 1980s but his legacy lives on at the National Automobile Museum. One can assume that Mr. Harrah hired Thomas Hoyne (well known for his illustrations of fishing and sailing vessels) to paint some of his favorite cars for him. This is an intriguing collection of artworks of pre-war automobiles and an historical documentation of the automobile industry.
