Signed Hu Jieqing Floral Painting on Paper (1982)

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Hu Jieqing (Chinese, 1905-2001). Ink and color on handmade paper, ca. 1982. Calligraphy down right side and artist's red seal/chop at lower right. A beautiful floral painting by Chinese artist Hu Jieqing who specialized in painting flowers and birds as well as calligraphy. Jieqing was greatly influenced by her mentor Qi Baishi, who learned the fundamentals of gongbi with fine brushwork and steadfast attention to detail from Hu Qinyuan, but nevertheless painted in a free and expressive manner. An exquisite piece by Jieqing, set in an attractive custom frame behind glass, with a handwritten inscription on the verso that reads, "painted by Lao She's widow, Nov. 1982 / Lao She: author of The Teahouse (and) The Rickshaw Boy / given to me while visiting her home in Beijing". Size of sight view: 17.125" L x 12.5" W (43.5 cm x 31.8 cm) Size of frame: 24" L x 17" W (61 cm x 43.2 cm) Born in Beijing as Yuzhen, Hu Jieqing's pen names included Yanyan, Huchun, and Jieqing. She graduated from Beijing Normal University in 1931 with a degree in Chinese literature. She was married to the author Lao She (also Shu Qingchun, 1899-1966) and studied with Qi Baishi (1864-1957). Hu Jieqing worked as a senior artist at the Chinese Academy of Painting in Beijing, received multiple awards and honors, and had several solo exhibitions - Hong Kong (1980), National Art Museum in Beijing (1998), and an exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of her birth at the National Art Museum in Beijing (2005). In addition, she was a member of the Artists Association of China and the Calligraphers Association of China. In 1980, Jieqing's works were published in "The First Album of Jieqing's Paintings". Devoted to the oeuvre of her husband, the author Lao She, Jieqing also edited and illustrated his works with woodcuts. Furthermore, the home she shared with her husband was transformed into the Lao She memorial, and Jieqing wrote the character for happiness (Fu) on the wood screen wall. Provenance: private Asheville, North Carolina, USA collection, a gift from Jieqing received when the owner visited the artist's home in Beijing in November of 1982 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
