Huang Miaozi was born in Zhongshan, Guangzhou and studied calligraphy under Deng Erya (1884 – 1954). He moved to Shanghai in the 1930s and worked as a caricaturist. From 1992 he lived in Australia where he was a professor at the Griffith University in Queensland.

      Ink on paper China, 1954 Miaozi 黃苗子 (1913-2012) - Chinese calligrapher, caricaturist and art historian Calligraphy with a poem by MAO Zedong Signed, dated and with dedication 'written by Huang Miaozi, October 1954, for the comrade Mr. Klemke' (九五 四年 十月 为 克莱姆凯 同志 书 黄苗子) Seal upper right 'For the people' (为人民) as well as artist's seal lower left Sheet size: 70 x 44.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Berlin Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. The calligraphy depicts the following poem by Mao Zedong (1893-1976), entitled 'Mount Liupan' (清平乐 六盘山) from 1935: 天高云淡           The sky is high, the clouds are pale, 望断南飞雁。    We watch the wild geese vanish southward. 不到长城非好汉, If we fail to reach the Great Wall we are not men 屈指行程两万。 We who have already measured twenty thousand li 六盘山上高峰, High on the crest of Mount Liupan 红旗漫卷西风。 Red banners wave freely in the west wind. 今日长缨在手, Today we hold the long cord in our hands, 何时缚住苍龙? When shall we bind fast the Grey Dragon? Huang Miaozi 黄苗子 (1913-2012) Huang Miaozi was born in Guangdong and studied in Hong Kong. From the age of eight he studied the art of calligraphy under the famous Chinese scholar DENG Erya (1884-1954) and later gained recognition as a painter and calligrapher. He moved to Shanghai in the 1930s and worked as a caricaturist. During the war he was part of the anti-Japanese alliance. Huang also worked as an art critic and writer. He was imprisoned as a political criminal during the Cultural Revolution but later managed to reestablish his reputation in China. From 1992 he lived in Australia where he was a professor at the Griffith University in Queensland. Some works by Huang Miaozi are now in the collection of the British Museum in London. Condition: The work is in good condition with signs of age. There is light foxing allover and a water stain in the upper left corner. The paper shows creases, marginal blemishes and a few small holes along the edges. The sheet size is 70 x 44.5 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
