Featured in this lot is this 1923 first edition of, "Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book" printed and made into a book by the Roycrofters and published by WM. H. Wise & Company. Elbert Green Hubbard (1856 1915) was an important force in the American Arts and Crafts Movement, inspired by the work of William Morris, and in 1895 he founded the Roycroft artists' community in East Aurora, NY. The Roycroft community included printers, furniture makers, metal smiths, leather smiths, and bookbinders. The Roycroft campus is now a National Historic Landmark. This book is a vast collection of more than seven hundred quotations meant to inspire genius, as it contains favored sayings of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century essayist Elbert Hubbard. The book is bound with paper and twine and reads on the front, "Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book" with a red and black design below it. The title page shows a black & white portrait of Hubbard in his workshop. Overall the book shows good condition with wear present to the corners of the cover from its age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage is noted. The interior pages show good condition as well, with no foxing, staining or tears present. The book measures 10 11/16" L x 8 5/16" W x 1" D and weighs 1 pound and 14 ounces.
