    • Harlan Hubbard (Kentucky, 1900-1988) Large Early Oil
      Sep. 25, 2024

Harlan Hubbard (Kentucky, 1900-1988) Large Early Oil

      Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Oil on heavy cotton wove canvas. Ohio River tugboat scene, showing the W.C. Mitchell. Ca. 1944. Signed to the lower right. 22.5" x 27.5" (board size); 29.5" x 35" (frame) Hubbard wrote about the boat in his memoir "Shanty Boat" saying, "Once we heard a full-toned whistle, familiar yet not to be identified. Then as we watched, the old, almost forgotten towboat W. C. Mitchell steamed past, panting and clanking, putting forth clouds of smoke and steam. It was a boat from the past, not like the new white boats, but ancient and gray, in harmony with the sunset reflected in the eastern sky and water. In the following weeks the W. C. Mitchell passed frequently; then after an interval of absence its total loss was reported." Hubbard also sketched this boat, visible in the excerpt pages from his book (see images). The canvas has been trimmed and laid down to board, likely during a reframing. Merida Galleries, Louisville, KY sticker to backing paper.

Abstract View of the Ohio 16"x22" oil on canvas, signed lower right. Est. $4,000-$8,000. Provenance: This painting along with the 13 woodblocks appearing in this auction were purchased from a woman who was friends with the Hubbards. She provided this very sweet remembrance of how she came to have 'Abstract View of the Ohio'... "The oil I sent you was a gift to me from Harlan. The first time I went to Payne Hollow, Harlan showed me around, and when we got to his studio, he told me to pick out a painting to take home. I looked around, and that one was way up in the rafters of the studio, covered in bird droppings. Harlan seemed a bit taken aback by my choice, but he got a ladder, climbed up and brought it down. He carried the painting around with him the rest of the day, and each time we sat down, he would set it across from him and eye it as we all chatted. Just before we went in for dinner that evening, he handed it to me and said I could keep it."

A couple of row boats in the foreground. Signed "Harlan Hubbard" lower right in pencil. This among the most involved compositions seen from the artist. Harlan Hubbard, "Ohio at Hanover Looking Toward Payne Hollow"

      Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Harlan Hubbard (American/Kentucky, 1900-1988). Oil on board and housed in the artist's self made frame comprised of cut down tobacco sticks. Signed on the riverbank and dated 83. Inscribed on verso the following: "Ex. Coll. Emmett Sherlock Wood/ Madison, Ind./ Harlan Hubbard/ 1983/ Ohio at Hanover looking toward Payne Hollow". 9.75" x 22.5" (sight), 12.5" x 25" (framed). Harlan Hubbard was an artist, writer, and naturalist who lived in a self-constructed home on the Ohio River dubbed "Payne Hollow". After a riverboat trip to New Orleans, the artist published "Shantyboat: A River Way of Life" and he and his wife Anna spent the next several decades in Payne Hollow living a frugal life off the land. At his Payne Hollow studio he produced many paintings and woodcuts, principally of Ohio river scenes. Recently, Payne Hollow has commenced with restoration by a non profit group. Hubbard was often called "Kentucky's Thoreau", given his great interest in the naturalist author, and Payne Hollow was also referred to as "Walden on the Ohio".
