Below this is the autograph signature of the sitter "F.B. Pischer[?]". Date: 19th century Description: Half-length portrait in quarter profile of an unknown young man.       Auguste Hüssener, portrait of Käthchen Schönkopf, c.1855, steel engraving Description: Steel engraving by Auguste Hüssener, signed in the plate lower right, inscribed below: "Käthchen Schönkopf". Very nice portrait of Käthe Schönkopf as a young woman en face. Käthe Schönkopf wears a lace-trimmed dress, her dark hair is pinned up at the back of her head. She looks earnestly at the viewer. Käthe Schönkopf was Goethe's first great love during his time in Leipzig. In the "Golden Bear" he had fallen in love with the innkeeper's daughter. In "Dichtung und Wahrheit" (Poetry and Truth) he writes about her: "...when the daughter of the house, a very pretty, nice girl, pleased me very much and I had the opportunity to exchange friendly glances with her." Auguste Hüssener (Stettin 1789 - Berlin 1877) was a German engraver and miniature painter. She had studied under the engraver Ludwig Buchhorn, who was a lecturer at the Prussian Academy of Arts and head of the Academic School of Engraving. Hüssener was regularly represented with her works at the exhibitions of the Berlin Academy. Her portraits of important contemporaries from the high nobility, art circles, diplomacy and science made her well-known. Her main focus was on the women of her time.
