Awards include a one-year residency at PS1, New York, three-month residencies at Banff Arts Center, Canada and Bemis Arts Center, Nebraska. In 2006 he was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center and the ‘Albers Foundation’, Connecticut. Hughes’ work is held in many public collections, including both Irish Arts Councils and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Hughes has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout Ireland and beyond (including Butler Gallery, Context, Goethe Institute, Hugh Lane Golden Bough, Millennium Court, Ormeau Baths Gallery, Pulse Miami, Rubicon Gallery, Sirius Arts Centre, Steve Turner Los Angeles) and has participated in many group exhibitions worldwide. In 2017 ‘Strange Attractors’, a large survey show of his recent work, received a major Arts Council grant to tour the Model Sligo, Limerick City Gallery and the RHA Dublin. The show was accompanied by an extensive publication designed by Atelier and including texts by Martin Herbert and Joanne Laws. During the tour, NVTV produced a television programme, ‘Collapse the Box – Ronnie Hughes’, which featured a 25 minute interview with Marianne O’Kane Boal at the RHA. Hughes’ work has been written about extensively and he has received a multitude of awards including a one-year residency in New York (PS1, 1990-91) and three-month residencies at Banff Arts Center, Canada (1994) and Bemis Arts Center, Nebraska (1997). In 2006 he was awarded both the ‘Irish Artist Fellowship’ - a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center and a two-month residency at the ‘Albers Foundation’ in Connecticut. Hughes’ work is held in many public and corporate collections, including both Irish Arts Councils and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.       MASTER PIECE 142.5 by 312cm.; 56 by 52in. signed, titled, inscribed and dated 1990 on the reverse oil on wax on canvas, unframed NOTE Born in Belfast, Hughes is perhaps most well known for his more recent work incorporating curvilinear shapes such as coils, rings, and loops with synthetic forms such as pills and tablets into his own abstract style. In contrast, Master Piece is an important early work and was painted in the same year that the artist undertook a one-year residency in New York at the prestigious PS1. His work is now held in many public and corporate collections including both the Irish Arts Councils and the Irish Museum of Modern Art and he was recently awarded the 'Irish Artist Fellowship' for a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center.

Exhibited: BP Young European Artists, BP Oil Europe, Brussels, 1991 Born in Belfast, Ronnie Hughes obtained an MA in Fine Art from the University of Ulster. His talent as a young emerging painter was recognised in 1991 when he was awarded the internationally coveted year-long fellowship at PS1 studios in New York. Since then he has hadnumerous solo exhibitions particularly at the Rubicon Gallery, Dublin and a major survey of his career to date was held at the Sligo Model Arts Centre in 1998. His work is represented in the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and is discussed at length in Liam Kelly's Thinking Long: Contemporary Art in the North of Ireland, Gandon Editions, Kinsale, 1996.
