Note: Hughes-Stanton was known for his expansive, romantic landscapes, of which the present work is a classic example, depicting an idealised pastoral view in the British countryside, occupied only by a small figure working in the golden wheat fields to the foreground. Hughes-Stanton was part of an artistic dynasty, as the son of William Hughes (1842-1901), and the father of Blair Hughes-Stanton (1902-1981).

TITLE: The valley, Corfu oil on canvas signed and dated 34 lower left 40 x 50 cm Herbert-Hughes Stanton was born on the 21st of November 1870 in Chelsea, London. He was the son of William Hughes, a still-life painter under whom he studied. Stanton was a prominent landscape oil and watercolour artist. He exhibited in a number of prestigious establishments such as The Grosvenor Gallery from 1887 and at The Royal Academy from 1897. He was awarded the gold medal at The Paris Salon in 1907 and 1908. He visited France regularly from 1906 to 1914 and served there as an Official War Artist, exhibiting work from this period at The Fine Art Society in 1919. Stanton was knighted in 1923. He died in Kensington, London on the 2nd of August 1937. A Memorial exhibition was held at The Fine Art Society in 1937. The valley, Corfu is a beautiful atmospheric landscape of Stanton created on one of his travels abroad, specifically to Corfu, Greece.
