Stav A. Německá řádová sestra, františkánka, kreslířka a malířka, vlastním jménem Berta Hummel. Proslavila se obrázky dětí a keramickými figurkami, vyráběnými podle jejích návrhů. V roce 1931 absolvovala Státní školu užitého umění v Mnichově. Poté vstoupila do kláštera Sießen v Horním Švábsku. O rok později byly představeny první barevně glazované postavičky z jemné keramiky, zhotovené Goebelovými modeléry Arthurem Möllerem a Reinholdem Ungerem. Klášter pak dostával část výtěžku z prodeje těchto figurek na svůj provoz. M. Hummel zemřela předčasně na tuberkulózu v roce 1946. BLUMENMADONNA MIT KIND Deutschland, Oeslau, W. Porcelain ‘Madonna and Child’, Hummel for Goebel, after 1935

        Est: €150 - €195

Porcelain, glazed Germany, after 1935 Made by: Porzellanmanufaktur F. & W. Goebel Design by: Maria Innocentia Hummel (1909-1946) – German nun and painter Marked on the underside with impressed manufacture marks Artist’s signature on the back ‘M. I. Hummel’ 30 cm (height); 21 cm (length) Good condition Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 700 EUR The porcelain depiction of a ‘Madonna with Child’ was made by the manufactory F. & W. Goebel following designs by the nun Maria Innocentia Hummel. Innocenti was part of the Franciscan order; she made endearing children’s pictures, which were rendered in porcelain by Goebel. These so-called ‘Hummel figures’ were – and still are – popular with collectors. This specific figure shows the Virgin Mother with her child, in intimate unison. Her son is on her lap and there is a book on her lap too. Her son carelessly rests his foot on it – it is of no concern to them; they are observing a flower. A bird sits on the edge of the book and keeps them company. The figure is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. There is a chip on the halo and slight dirt. There is an impressed manufacturing mark on the underside; hairline underneath; slight unevenness where the figure was sealed on the base. Artist’s signature on the back ‘M. I. Hummel’. The figure measures 30 cm (height); 21 cm (length). Porcelain manufacturer F. & W. Goebel The porcelain manufacturer F. & W. Goebel is a company in Coburg. It was founded 1871 by Franz Detleff and his son William Goebel and stayed in the family until its closing in the year 2006. Franz Goebel gained worldwide renown as the manufacturer of “Hummel figures”. 1934 he saw drawings by the nun Maria Innocentia Hummel (1909 – 1946) and one year later he already began producing the figures. They show children playing and other humorous, charming everyday situations. The decorative, high quality porcelain figures were especially sought-after on the American market Maria Innocentia Hummel Maria Innocentia Hummel (really Berta Hummel) was born on the 21υst of May 1909 in Massing. She died 1946 in the convent of Sießen. A Franciscan nun and graphic artist/painter, she was known particularly for her children’s drawings and the so-called Hummel ceramic figures. She received an art education while at a catholic girl’s school, then completed studies in applied art in Munich, 1931. After her studies, she joined the Franciscan Order of Sießen in the district of Oberschwaben and took the name Maria Innocentia. She continued to work as an art teacher, supporting catholic schools, but never lost sight of her passion for children’s drawings.
