Arthur Humpal American / Indiana, (1902-1998) landscape with mountains and trees oil on canvas with varnish Signed lower right. Signed verso with COA attached verso. Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in Chicago, Illinois and a resident from 1927 of Nashville, Indiana, Arthur Humpal was a reclusive man who was part of the Brown County, Indiana art colony. He claimed that he never sold a painting, and when he was placed in a nursing home, 500 paintings were in his possession. Arthur Humpal died October 15, 1998 at a Brown County (IN) nursing home facility. After he, age 89 and near death, was rescued by local authorities at his cabin on Weedpatch Hill in Nashville, Indiana on December 29, 1991, he was taken to the hospital and then put into the nursing home the following year. At the time he was found, it was discovered that he had one of the largest art collections of any one artist in Indiana history. Art scholars and appraisers who have seen his paintings believe that his work was comparable to any of the great Hoosier artists at this famous art colony in Nashville, IN, and that he was the last of the great American Impressionists of the early 20th century. He was 95 years old when he passed on.
