Alfred William Hunt (1830 - 1896) United Kingdom

      Est: $800 - $1,500

Alfred William Hunt (1830 - 1896) Watercolor on Paper, Signed, Measures, ( 6.5 x 10 inches ) w/frame ( 12.5 x 15.5 inches ) Alfred William Hunt was a landscape painter and watercolorist who was first associated with the Liverpool School of Painters, but later had a successful London career. His watercolors, which were praised by Ruskin, often combine Pre-Raphaelite precision with Turneresque atmosphere. He was the son of a Liverpool landscape painter, but although he was precociously talented in art his parents wished him to enter the church. He went up to Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1848, won the Newdigate prize for poetry in 1851, and between 1853 and his marriage in 1861, held an Oxford fellowship. Meanwhile he had become an Associate of the Liverpool Academy in 1854, the year he also began to exhibit paintings at the Royal Academy, London. In 1856 Ruskin in Academy Notes praised one of his works there as "The best landscape I have ever seen in the exhibition for many a day''

Alfred William Hunt, RWS, British 1830-1896- Easedale Tarn; pencil and watercolour heightened

      Est: £600 - £800

Alfred William Hunt, RWS, British 1830-1896- Easedale Tarn; pencil and watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'A W Hunt / 1870' (lower right), 25 x 36.5 cm. Provenance: (Probably) With the Fine Art Society, 1884, no.86.; Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 15 June 2000, lot 267.; Private Collection, UK (by descent to the present owner). Note: Easedale Tarn is a mountain lake located in the centre of the Lake District. The ascent from Grasemere was popular during the Victorian period, and a refreshment hut was even established there in the 19th Century to service the thirsty visitors. Hunt's works are distinguished by their poetic renderings of atmosphere. He was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and the extraordinary detail apparent in his landscapes and the careful rendering of grass, leaves and trees is a consequence of this. Born in Liverpool, he frequently travelled around Britain, capturing the different landscapes he viewed, and indeed returned to the Lake District on a regular basis. Alfred William Hunt (British, 1830-1896). "First Railroad in England" ink drawing on paper, mid-19th century CE. A lovely drawing of a locomotive riding through the British countryside created in ink, gouache, and pencil. An inscription on the mat below reads, "First Railroad in England. Sketched by Alfred W. Hunt about 1835 - Sepia Sketch by Alfred W. Hunt, London, England, about 1835 - Best wishes - Edwin Hunt Frost and Marguerite Scribner Frost." Size: drawing measures 7.5" W x 4.625" H (19 cm x 11.7 cm); 11.875" W x 8.625" H (30.2 cm x 21.9 cm) w/ cardstock backing; 13.5" W x 11.25" H (34.3 cm x 28.6 cm) w/ mat Given that Alfred Hunt was born in 1830, this date is not likely accurate. ALFRED WILLIAM HUNT, O.W.S. (1830-1896) WINDSOR CASTLE FROM THE RIVER THAMES watercolour 26.0 x 36.0cm / 10 1/4 x 14in Alfred William Hunt was born in Liverpool, where he first exhibited at the age of 12. After reading Classics at Corpus Christi, Oxford and winning a scholarship there, he became a fellow of the college. At his friend John Ruskin's suggestion, he continued to paint alongside his academic work. He eventually gave up his fellowship to concentrate on art professionally and found great success with his landscape paintings. He was one of the leading practitioners of Ruskin's principles of painting in his day. He has been described as "fusing the sweep and atmosphere of Turner with Pre-Raphaelite finish and compositional originality" (1) and "his works ranked by some with Turner's" (2). For a comparable subject by the artist, see Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art, Christie's, London, 13.07.2016, Lot 168.
