Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) ~ 1923-1985 Cedar carved in high relief, polychrome painted, mounted with raffia; signed in the interior. Height: 12.25 in. Henry Hunt began his carving career as an apprentice to his father-in-law, Mungo Martin. Hunt began assisting Martin at the famous installation of poles at the British Columbia Provincial Museum's Thunderbird Park in Victoria in 1954, succeeded Martin as principal carver in 1962, and continued working there until 1974. Hunt and his sons created the Mungo Martin memorial pole at Alert Bay in 1970-71. Hunt worked only with traditional tools; a set of these was acquired by the provincial museum on his death in 1985.
