      Beatrice M L Huntington, Scottish 1889-1988-Provence;oil on canvas, signed, inscribed and dated 1926, bears inscribed label attached to the reverse of the frame, 60x74cm (ARR)Provenance: 'Beatrice Huntington, William Macdonald: An Exhibition of Paintings', 5-30 January 1990, at Aitken & Dott (The Scottish Gallery), Edinburgh; subsequently purchased from the estate by the present ownerNote: Born in St Andrews, Scotland, Beatrice Huntington studied at the Academie Julian in Paris and later had a studio in Chelsea. She lived in Edinburgh from 1928 until her death. She was a member of the Scottish Royal Academy for ten years, before resigning over a point of principle. The present work is of the grandmother of a small Provençal village near Cassis where Huntington and her husband often stayed. The striking landscape echoes the harsh geometry of the old woman's face, reflecting the influence of Cubism on Huntington's work. The frame is original, designed by the artist and made by Boullet in London.
