An English painter born in London, Frederick Yeates trained at the Royal Academy, where he soon began to exhibit. In 1823 he won the Academy's gold medal for historical painting. In 1831 he was elected a member of the Society of British Artists, of which he became president in 1835; it was to its exhibitions that he sent most of his paintings, as he became a pronounced critic of the Academy's management. His historical paintings and portraits were very numerous. Some of the most representative are "A Venetian Page" (1824), "The Charming Armida" (1831), "Eros" (1836), "Prisoner of Chillon" (1837), "Girl from Sorrento" (1847), "Boabdil" (1854) and his portrait of the 7th Count of Cavan (1833). The present painting corresponds to one of the most important periods of his artistic production when, after his trip to Italy, Spain and Morocco, he devoted himself to immortalising the countrymen of each territory. Costumbrist scenes such as the present one became the object of desire of numerous collectors.
