After completing his MFA from the Royal College of Art, London in 1973, he studied at the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary and the University of California at Berkeley. In 1974, Hushlak won the World Print Competition hosted jointly by the Smithsonian Institute and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for computer-generated print. He moved to Calgary, Alberta, in 1977, to take up a teaching position at the University of Calgary and pursue his cross-disciplinary work in art and computer science. Hushlak has recently collaborated with Christian Jacob and Jeffrey Boyd, professors in medicine and computing science, at the University of Calgary, and have created audience-driven interactive computer installations using evolutionary computing, which they have named SwarmArt. The cutting-edge art technology journal, Leonardo, featured their interactive work as a cover story in the summer of 2007.Hushlak has participated in over 40 solo exhibitions throughout his career and, in recent years, he and his colleagues have presented installations, or hardcopy deriving from the installations, in more than a dozen exhibitions, including the Nickle Art Gallery and New York Museum of Science and Technology. SwarmArt has also been screened on several occasions on the Discovery Channel.
