Somewhere Last Winter is a poignant artwork by renowned Malaysian artist Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, showcasing his exceptional ability to merge abstraction with personal narrative. Created in the late 20th century, this piece reflects Ibrahim’s deep exploration of memory, time, and the human experience. The artwork features a rich palette of warm and earthy tones, creating a sense of depth and introspection. Ibrahim employs his signature techniques, including layered textures and dynamic brushwork, to evoke feelings of nostalgia and contemplation. The title suggests a reflection on moments that linger in the mind, perhaps representing the fleeting nature of winter and the emotional resonance it carries.

          Ibrahim Hussein, Datuk (b. 1936 - 2009) Dance Of Joy, 1985

          Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

This work with the trademark fine rhythmic parallel lines by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein was done in conjunction with the soloist performance of the Royal Danish Ballet in Malaysia in June 1985. Five figures in body hugging leotards are shown moving towards left, four with left hand raises upwards. The lines are clean and neat with certain areas revealing accentuations of darker tones. Part of their limbs are etched out against a rectangular board etched with waves of Ibrahim's inimitable lines running horizontally in a viscous flow. The work was done in offset lithograph in edition of 155, with the proceeds of sale going to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1956 but did not complete it. He graduated from the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting (1959-1963), and the Royal Academy in London (1963-1966). In 1970, he took part in the Venice Biennale through the Smithsonian Institute workshop and in 1977, he was featured in the eventful tripartite exhibition with Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali in Kuwait. He was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in 1986. His awards include the Anugerah Tokoh Terbilang (2007), the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988), the Monte Carlo 18th International Exhibition of Contemporary Art (1984), the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela (1993). He set up the Ibrahim Museum and Cultural Foundation in Langkawi in 2000 and celebrated it with the Langkawi International Festival of Arts. He also organised the Club Mediterranee Asian Arts Festival in Cherating (Pahang) and Bali.

          Ibrahim Hussein, Datuk (b. 1936 - 2009) Untitled, 1984

          Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

Created in 1984, this intricate drawing of interweaving forms by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein features gestural lines and refined cross-hatches done unhesitant and spontaneously. His natural free-flowing lines are a trademark of his gift. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein was enrolled at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore in 1956. He received a scholarship to study at the prestigious Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting and the Royal Academy of Arts in London where he graduated in 1963 and 1966 respectively. A Fulbright Award saw him touring the United States and participating in exhibitions there. His career hit sky-high when he was selected to exhibit alongside Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali in Kuwait in 1977. In 1970, he was selected for the Smithsonian Institute workshop in the Venice Biennale. He had won many illustrious international awards, including the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988), the Monte Carlo 18th International Exhibition of Contemporary Art (1984), the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela (1993), the Order of Bernardo O' Higgins of Chile (1996), the World Economic Forum's Crystal Award (1997) and the Anugerah Tokoh Melayu Terbilang (2007). A rare recipient of triple "Datuk" titles from various royalties, Ib was honoured with a retrospective exhibition by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 1986. After 11 years of struggles and planning, the Ibrahim Hussein Museum and Cultural Foundation in Langkawi was launched in 2000. Together with his wife Datin Sim, he had organised the Club Mediterranee Asian Arts Festival in Cherating, Pahang and in Bali, Indonesia, as well as the 1st Langkawi International Festival of the Arts.

          Ibrahim Hussein, Datuk (b. 1936 - 2009) Untitled, 1979

          Est: RM12,000 - RM20,000

The bales of cross-hatches and more static parallel lines, differently coloured and softly interweaved, reveals Datuk Ibrahim Hussein's fine draughtsmanship. Featuring a variety of lines, his delicate cross hatchings are gently positioned on top of a geometric rectangular shape. The fluid combination of forms has evolved from the artist's exploration of ideas through the instinctive drawing process. The legendary Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is incontrovertibly one of Malaysia's most internationally iconic artists. He was given the prestigious Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum in 1997, and was the first Malaysian to have taken part in the Venice Biennale, under the Smithsonian Institute Workshop programme in 1970. And he was with the world's art pantheons in the tripartite exhibition in Kuwait in 1977, the other two masters being Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali. Est: RM90,000 - RM160,000

This widely-recognised and international artist, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, affectionally regarded as Ib, described his abstract works as futuristic and it was through a distinctive ordering of lines that he expressed differing complexities of form and dimensions. Ib created an extraordinary legacy of paintings over a half century revolving around his life and humanity, events and personalities. Seen here in Ib’s ‘Untitled’ work from 1974, one can discern that most of his works often have a semi-figurative or figurative abstraction element poised within a flattened and ambiguous space, reverberating complexity and swirls of colours. This particular work emanates a calmness by the soft hues of blue tone variants. He often emitted lines, colours and shapes onto canvas in direct response to the world around him, imploring all who viewed his art to be as moved as he was by the struggles and pleasures in the world.

Datuk Ibrahim Hussein was born in 1936 in the village of Sungai Limau Dalam in the Yan district of Kedah. Growing up, Ibrahim was a very curious lad. He is known for his mastery in the ‘printage’ technique which was inspired by his time spent in New York. The city was dotted by ubiquitous billboards, adorned by beautiful women promoting all sorts of products which in turn, sparked the idea of using the images as a social commentary for his artworks. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein never fails to captivate art enthusiasts by proving his mastery in abstract which is often deemed futuristic due to the complexity in the way he expresses the forms and dimensions of his creation. The following art piece was part of the series of artworks exhibited and sold by Galerie International New York between 1964 and 1967.

The London exposures of Ibrahim Hussein's stint at the Byam Shaw Academy (1959-1963) proved the most ebullient as he toyed around with the building blocks of abstractions, which gelled into more figurative flourishes in his stint in the United States in the latter half of the 1960s. Figure entanglements in planar geometric settings, with slanted panels and subdued pastel colours revealed restlessness and rumblings of commotion and even protests (Trafalgar Square). Ib, as the artist is popularly known, was still dabbling with brush and paint, before opting also for gouache and collage on 'canvas' of magazine paper in New York. In 1963, Ib had a solo at the John Whibley Gallery in London, and the next year, won the Griffin Prize. Of Ib's oeuvre, the London art critic Charles S. Spencer wrote: "The conscious over-laying of the linear definitions of the figures to such an extent that they become blurred into bulbous almost sculptural forms, gives the impression of not only movement but of power." Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is world-class, the most high profiled of Malaysian artists. He was given the global Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum (1997), was the first Malaysian to have taken part in the Venice Biennale (under the Smithsonian Institute Workshop, 1970), and he featured in a Best-of-the-World tripartite exhibition together with Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali in Kuwait in 1977. Est: RM500,000 - RM800,000

This Ibrahim Hussein vintage of the 1968-1970 period with a large diagonal cylindrical blob across the canvas in nocturnal setting spells a most fecund period that saw the likes of Kabuki, Xenobiosis, My Father And The Astronaut, Lebai Malang, Pak Utih, Chairil Anwar, The Sick Politician and May 13. Dated 1968, it indicated that Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, or Ib as he is popularly known, was probably still overseas, with Pop Art, counter-culture and the Hippy Movement and a time of the proliferation of hallucinogenic drugs. Is this a landscape or a coalescence of luminous physical forms with gorgeous combination of colour highlights in undulating facets? Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is world-class, the most high profiled of Malaysian artists. In London and the United States, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein innovated with a new technique of image transfer dubbed "printage". This was before Ib's trademark curvilinear parallel lines that started when Sim, later his wife, gave him graphic pens during his Universiti Malaya residency in the mid-1970s.

When you get a cluster of bobbing heads, there's some animation about, like swimmingly floating, but what? is left to conjecture as you grasp the interconnectivity, or alienation perhaps, in some form of human activity. That is the way the world whirls, neither with a bang nor whisper, moving inexorably across a twin thin demarcating line, or static moving within an amoebic sac, so nuanced in colours. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is the most high profiled and world-classed Malaysian artist. Age is just a number, and not a hindrance to anything, unless one is incapacitated, or even so, for many a handicap have been known to overcome the odds. Yes, there is life, as long as one Ada Mood (has the mood), for love, for living, for struggles and for play. How often, life is about the shared laughter and memories, of time spent together, usually with a sweet platter of kueh and kopi, or teh tarik to whet the appetite. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein's composition evokes a dreamlike quality using a poetic interplay of lyrical overlapping forms. Everything revolves around a circle which either holds the artery of activity within its circumference or acts as a symbol of perfection. For a touch of romance, it also play-acts as the solitary moon. This circle is most prominent in various of Datuk Ibrahim Hussein's works - May 13, Senyum SeOrang Monyet, Kabuki and Lebai Malang, and others like Rendezvous, Dark Voices and Xenobiosis. The black circle irregularly circumscribed in white is breached in three large areas mainly from the top right and two arterial lines on the top left while another white irregular band forms within. The bottom is buttressed by a large red bar, unusually irregular. The lines look tentative, uncharacteristically uncertain in course, and the renditions ambiguous. Is there something amiss in the diagonal dissect, resulting in two glorious bands of purple? Is it the formation and depiction of life? Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is the most high profiled and world-classed Malaysian artist. This suite of 200-editioned offset lithographs was one of the first that Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, or Ib, as he was fondly known, had produced in limited editions, the others included Dance Of Life and the cover painting for his major Japan shows at the Takashimaya Gallery in Tokyo and Osaka in 1989. Dance was something dear to Ib's heart with his close association with dancers Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, Lari Leong and Mavin Khoo (who made a rare dance cameo for his 72nd birthday celebration) and his inclusion of dancers in the arts festivals he organised. Ib had always been fascinated by the traditional Balinese dance repertoire - Kecak, Legong and Barong. His dancing lines drift ecstatically in motion, moving erratically in sync with the transcendental movements of the Kecak ritual. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein was enrolled at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore in 1956. He received a scholarship to study at the prestigious Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting and the Royal Academy in London where he graduated in 1963 and 1966 respectively. A Fullbright Award saw him touring the United States and participating in exhibitions there. After 11 years of struggle and planning, the Ibrahim Hussein Museum and Cultural Foundation in Langkawi was launched in 2000. Together with his wife Datin Sim, he had organised the Club Mediterranee Asian Arts Festival in Cherating, Pahang and in Bali, Indonesia as well as the First Langkawi International Festival of the Arts.

This work with the tell-tale rhythmic lines as enunciation of forms or ornamental fluff is definitely post-1975 when Ibrahim Hussein, later made a Datuk, was given graphic pens by Sim, later his wife, during his art residency at Universiti Malaya. Here, the cacing (worm) lines looks tentative and less as a whiplash parallel spirals, against splotches and blotches that bewilder perspectival space, and bunched in an irregular organic oval. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is the epitome genius of Malaysian Art, celebrated internationally by five prominent accolades: 1) Being awarded the world-class Crystal Award (World Economic Forum); 2) Selected with Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali in the Best-of-the-World tripartite exhibition in Kuwait in 1977; 3) First Malaysian taking part in the Venice Biennale (1970); 4) Winning an award in the XVIII Prix International D'Art Contemporain de Monte Carlo (1984); 5) Honoured with the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela (1993), the Order of Bernardo Higgins (Chile's highest honour to a foreigner, 1996), and the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988). In abstract art, it is often the title that guides, orientates and telescopes the viewer towards an understanding, however ambiguous, from the forms, geometry or brushstrokes and colours (emotions). Ditto, a title like Two Figures, when the viewer imagines two entities, either in coalescence or as antithesis. This is also contingent to the emotional state of viewer on contact with work. Often, an artist uses a set of techniques or composition to suggest his original intent, which may or may not be clear in the final product. The figures could be hugging (harmony) or fighting (tension). In abstract art, it is up to the viewer to interpret. This work combines the gestural with collages and even an image transfer Ib dubbed his “printage” (developed in 1967). Est: RM22,000 - RM40,000

What's with a window cleaner that Ibrahim Hussein, later a Datuk, was so gobsmacked by it that he painted at least two versions under the title, Window Cleaner? A bigger work, an oil on canvas measuring 127 x 101.6cm, was shown at Galerie Internationale, New York. The work which can be regarded as an early abstract comes with provenance of having been auctioned at Doyle and Design in New York. When in New York, Ib, as Ibrahim Hussein is popularly known as, was greeted by a phalanx of skyscrapers, something Malaysia did not have until 1978-80, even then few and far in between. So, when staying in one of the glass facades, he marvelled at the window cleaners precariously suspended outside. In 1974, there was even a sex-comedy movie, Confessions Of A Window Cleaner, done very much in the vein of the ‘Carry On' film franchise that carried on for 31 films, between 1958 and 1992. It's been said, even now, that some of Ibrahim Hussein's best works were produced during the 1960s, when he stumbled onto the Pop and Beatnik zeitgeist with the Flower People, the anti-this and anti-that revolution, in London and New York. Est: RM200,000 - RM350,000

It's fortuitous that Ibrahim Hussein, later a Datuk, was in London and New York City at a time of great socio-cultural ferment. It's a great zeitgeist with the counter-culture, anti-conformist stirrings of the Jamaican Rastafari, Pop and Beatniks of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. The Rastafari introduced the reggae sounds of the legendary Bob Marley and Marcia Griffiths. Or the CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) in London, especially Trafalgar Square. The image of a Rasta woman in an orb with the braided dreadlocks could have been appropriated from commercial posters in NYC, which he juxtaposed next to a cylindrical two-tiered with images in red on a green background in the top panel. There's something Cleopatra-ish about the female head with the heavily sickle eyebrows and enunciated eyelids, as if emerging from nowhere out of a black beyond. This rare work of absolute quality is done in 1969, which means derived from one of the most fecund and incipient periods of Datuk Ibrahim Hussein's multi-faceted artistic developments. At this time, he had developed a technique called printage which initially imprinted in works such as Why You Are The Way You Are; Adakah Seorang Diri Disana; and Tumult. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein has an impeccable international profile with the accolades of the World Economic Forum's Crystal Award (1997), Venezuela's Order of Andres Bello (1993), Chile's Order of Bernardo O. Higgins (1996), the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988), and the Monte Carlo Contemporary Art Award (1984). He was the first Malaysian taking part in the Venice Biennale under the Smithsonian Institute Workshop programme in 1970. In 1977, he was chosen to exhibit with Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali in the tripartite masters exhibition in Kuwait. He was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in 1986. In 2007, he was awarded the Anugerah Tokoh Melayu Terbilang, apart from the Datuk titles three times. His art tutelage was at the Byam Shaw School (1959-1963) and the Royal Academy in London (1963-1966). He is also remembered for setting up the Ibrahim Museum and Cultural Foundation (Langkawi), which ran his museum, now defunct, and the first Langkawi International Festival of Arts (LIFA). Ib, as the artist is popularly known, was also the prime-mover behind the Club Mediterranee Asian Arts Festival in Cherating (Pahang) and Bali.

Mindscape is a popular opening gambit of several senior artists. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein here, Latiff Mohidin and Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, to name a few. Ib, as Ibrahim Hussein is more popularly known, had captivated with his ribbons of lines, mostly running parallel and curvilinear for some two decades now, with a horizontal orientation and meeting in the central region, not centrifugally, but still in rhythmic flows. What is distracting is the long sepia-tone tape-like line running down slightly slanted near the right edge, like an obstacle but not affecting the composition, and a broad but truncated ‘X' in grey at the bottom, which looks pivotal. It has a blue veneer throughout. Wassily Kandinsky once intoned: “Almost without exception, blue refers to the domain of abstraction and immateriality.” Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is world-class based on three major accolades. 1) He was given the global Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum in 1997; 2) He was the first Malaysian to have taken part in the Venice Biennale under the Smithsonian Institute Workshop programme in 1970; 3) He was chosen together with Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali in a best-of-the-world tripartite exhibition in Kuwait in 1977. Other international awards include the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela (1993), the Order of Bernardo Higgins (Chile's highest honour to a foreigner, 1996), the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988), and the XVIII Prix International D'Art Contemporain de Monte Carlo (1984). On the local front, he was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in 1986, awarded the Anugerah Tokoh Melayu Terbilang (2007) and had been conferred the Datuk title three times. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, or Ib, as he was more affectionately known, was born in 1936 in a village called Sungai Limau in Kedah. He studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, and then continued his studies in London at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. One international critic described his abstract work as “futuristic and it is through a distinctive ordering of lines that he expresses differing complexities of form and dimensions.” Ib used a medium which he devised himself called “printage” - a mixture of printing and collage. He passed away due to a heart attack in 2009. Celebrated as one of Malaysia’s most forward-thinking artists and recognised for his work both internationally and on home ground, Ibrahim Hussein has a body of work that spans more than half a century and has left an extraordinary legacy of paintings that revolve around his perceptions of life, humanity, his country and the personalities that he met throughout the years.

This work with the trademark fine rhythmic parallel lines by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein was done in conjunction with the performance of the Royal Danish Ballet in Malaysia in June 1985. With awards like the Crystal Award, participation in the hugely prestigious Venice Biennale in 1970, what with a tripartite exhibition in Kuwait in 1977 with Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is incontrovertibly Malaysia's most internationally iconic artist. Tutelage at Byam Shaw followed by the Royal Academy in London burnished his credentials like no other. Malaysia's National Art Gallery accorded Ib a Retrospective, followed with great fanfare, in 1986. A triple Datuk and awards such as the Anugerah Tokoh Terbilang (2007), the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988), the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela (1993) and the Order of Bernardo O' Higgins of Chile (1996) made him an artist extraordinaire. Est: RM350,000 - RM550,000

In New York in February 1968, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein discovered and developed a reverse transfer technique of mass-media print headlines he dubbed printage. He was there under the Fulbright and John D. Rockefeller III fellowships. Like a news editor, he orchestrated some selected news items of the day, to add currency and veracity, and for a little titillation for some were juicy bits of tabloid fodder. For the coup de grace, he let his inimitable ribbons of parallel lines take full rein. Ib, as the artist is popularly known, recommissioned his printage of the Popsy 60s. Some of his most notable work this period was He Says (1986), shown in his 1986 Retrospective. Ib gave his printage another hurrah in his China (heralding the rise of China) and Myanmar series (portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi). The dizzying cocktail of Sex and Money makes for a salacious brew, in a raft of headlines dominated by ‘B' (David) Beckham, Blondie (Debbie Henry), Bob Geldof, (Tony) Blair and (Michael) Bolton. The type of newspapers is distinguished by the headline fonts: sans serif for tabloids and the pedantic series for the staid conservative broadsheets or junior broadsheets. The sources were The Sun and The Daily Mail tabloids and The Times broadsheet. World Cup soccer fever was in the air, with the Mexico finals only a year away (2006), and there's much British chest-beating jingoism, touting (Wayne) Rooney as a chanticleer hero. The Brits were obviously expecting him to do a Geoff Hurst, who scored a hattrick in England's 4-2 defeat of West Germany in the 1966 World Cup finals in London. Out of turn, perhaps, are a focus on a British housewife as an unlikely best friend of Hitler, and a spicy take about exporting curry to Bangladesh. And if nothing catches the eye, there's always the eye-candy Page 3 Girl. "Because blue contracts, retreats, it is the color of transcendence, leading us away in pursuit of the infinite." William Gass, On Being Blue: A Philosophical Inquiry (1976). Wassily Kandinsky concurs: "Blue refers to the domain of abstraction and immateriality." The eyes are gravitated towards the deep blue, an ultramarine-dominant patch with white chromatic dilution, at the centre bounded by a brace of coalescing forms of torsos and limbs, with peripheral space at the edges dipped in the self-same ultramarines with the luxurious hues of lapis lazuli. While the blues are calming and soothing to mind and body, the ambiguous bracelet of entangled forms exude a rhythm and sense of movement with a flailing limb or two tracing odd shapes, suggesting a certain purity of relationships. "I am always driven by movement. Every living thing moves, moving in space and in time. Human movements come in various forms, on the football playing field they move with great determination to overcome their opponents, in a conflict they move with hatred with the intention to kill, in love the lovers move with love to show zuriat," Datuk Ibrahim Hussein was quoted as saying in 1969. One can feel the graceful, elegant movements of the water dancers. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is an extraordinarily gifted artist impacting the world with prestigious awards such as the Crystal Award (presented by the World Economic Forum, 1997), the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela (1993), the Order of Bernardo Higgins of Chile (1996), the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988) and Malaysia's Anugerah Tokoh Terbilang (2007) and is the only artist conferred the Datuk title thrice. Datuk Ibrahim's tripartite exhibition that also featured Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali, in Kuwait in 1977 was a game-changer for him. He was the first Malaysian in the Venice Biennale (1970), through the aegis of the American Smithsonian Institute workshop. A gift to a friend. Whatever the age milestone, the attainment of an age may be a marker, and a time for reflection, but more importantly, an expression of gratefulness, of reaching another milestone in one piece, if not in good health, and a worthy cause of celebration. The bales of cross-hatches and more static parallel lines, differently coloured and looking like odd fingerprints, and in one lump of morass too, may obscure the path taken or episodes surmounted. It's truly great to be alive and to remember the friendship and shared moments together. His international awards also include the XVIII Prix International D'Art Contemporain de Monte Carlo, the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela (1993), the Order of Bernardo Higgins (Chile's highest honour to a foreigner, 1996), the Japan Foundation Cultural Award (1988), with him accorded momentous solos in Venezuela, Chile and Japan. He was accorded a retrospective by the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in 1986. He was conferred the Datuk title three times, and awarded the Anugerah Tokoh Melayu Terbilang (2007). He had organised the Langkawi International Festival of Arts in 2000, after setting up his museum and foundation (2000) in Langkawi. One of the very few works dated 1964, signed only with the sobriquet ‘Ib', like Together and Untitled, which were in gouache. This was during his sojourn in New York. Obviously, at some point he must have seen or known about the Harlem Globetrotters with their basketball wizardry and comedic antics, world renowned during that era. This work was among several shown in a solo exhibition organised by the Singapore Art Society at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce in December 1966. Ib, as Ibrahim Hussein is popularly known, had just returned from London and New York. Ib held two solos in New York in 1965, inncluding one at Galeri Internationale. A critique in the New York Herald Tribute in April commented on the "…highly interesting abstract canvases in which evocative hard-edge geometry in subdued yet rich colours provides a background for complex figurative tangles. The latter appear utterly at home in Hussein's geometry, which reflects the man-made environment of our time." Somewhere Last Spring is an abstract collage on paper work by the legendary Datuk Ibrahim Hussein. Executed in 1965 while attending the Royal Academy of Arts in London, this pastel hued piece celebrates a memorable place with a burst of organic shapes of various sizes, straight and undulating black outlines rendered in muted and bold red tones. In the same year (1965), Ib, as the artist was affectionately known, had also held his second solo exhibition at Gallerie Internationale, New York. His exposure in the West had shaped his progressive world viewpoint thus he was able to create cosmopolitan and sophisticated works contemporary to his time in the context of Western society. A Fullbright Award saw him touring the United States and participating in exhibitions there.

Datuk Ibrahim Hussein’s artwork, “Just for You (Rumble Series, England)” created in 1964, stands as a powerful testament to his innovative artistic spirit and his ability to convey raw emotion through vibrant abstraction. Within this masterpiece, Ibrahim Hussein masterfully captures the dynamic energy and turbulence of human experience. The bold and energetic brushstrokes evoke a sense of movement and turmoil, reminiscent of the chaotic nature of existence itself. Ibrahim Hussein was born in 1936 in the village of Sungai Limau Dalam in the Yan district of Kedah.

On offer is a remarkable gem by internationally acclaimed Malaysian artist Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, or otherwise affectionately known as Ib. One central motif can be seen throughout Ib's impressive opus of work – the human figure. His early training in the British art schools had given him a firm foundation in drawing the human figure. Ib's figures had transformed from simplified and stylised shapes as seen in one of his earliest works Reclining Women (1957); to aerial views of semi-abstract figures entangled and rolling in fluid unending motions, suggesting scenes of struggle and tumult. Ib's pictures were inspired by events of human struggle and conflict: demonstrations at Trafalgar Square, London in 1960, the 1969 racial riot in Malaysia, and the 1982 Sabra massacre. However, he was not concerned with the depiction of specific events directly or literally, but rather to convey universal statements on humanity itself. Ib once said: "My role as an artist is to portray man's basic needs on planet Earth and humanity's universal sharing in God's little acre – the art of our time provides us ways of seeing, understanding, criticising, and appreciating the world which we live in.' But Ib's figures are not what set him apart from the rest; it is the distinctive flowing lines that have earned him such a high level of recognition. It was not until 1975, when his wife, Datin Sim, gave him a set of graphic pens that Ib's canvases were filled with sensuous lines of varying weight, direction and character. The primary element of line has taken a whole different role on the pictorial surface, liberating the preconceived notions and fulfilling the roles of the other elements of form, shape and dimension customarily used in pictorial composition. Dated 1973, this untitled piece contains Ib's hallmark syncopated rhythmic lines and a mass of human figures in movement or interacting, compacted in a placenta-like oblong membrane whose shape is dictated by the movements inside. The mesh of human forms is celebratory of life, the spirit of living and relentless struggles. Here, the lines are dynamic but rendered in broader, staccato strokes seemingly at random, to activate certain areas of the composition. It provides precious glimpses into Ib's distinctive fine line work that is set to become his inimitable trademark. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is world-class based on three major accolades. Mindscape is a popular opening gambit of several senior artists. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein here, Latiff Mohidin and Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Zubir, to name a few. Ib, as Ibrahim Hussein is more popularly known, had captivated with his ribbons of lines, mostly running parallel and curvilinear for some two decades now, with a horizontal orientation and meeting in the central region, not centrifugally, but still in rhythmic flows. What is distracting is the long sepia-tone tape-like line running down slightly slanted near the right edge, like an obstacle but not affecting the composition, and a broad but truncated 'X' in grey at the bottom, which looks pivotal. It has a blue veneer throughout. Wassily Kandinsky once intoned: "Almost without exception, blue refers to the domain of abstraction and immateriality." Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is world-class based on three major accolades. The period 1988-1989 for Datuk Ibrahim Hussein was one flushed with things Japanese: The Japan Foundation Cultural Award and the double solo exhibitions at Takashimaya in Tokyo and Osaka. This work awash with red-orangey hues of sunset was done after this Japan escapade. Even before his visits to Japan, Ib, as the artist is more popularly known, has a vintage 1969 work, Kabuki (in the Universiti Sains Malaysia collection) and Kimono (1996). Though intrinsically Japanese, the approach and treatment are dissimilar. Presumably static, the garden in this work brims with a life of its own, with an array of miniscule lines in parallel pursuit or criss-crossing and demarcated by colour bars. If the lines coagulate into a form, the image is undiscernible. It is ostensibly landscapist, with different lifeforms perhaps: there are no visible figures here, or is there? Ib had spoken about the emotional impetus behind his works, and professed to a predilection for movement, which translates as life, whether in time or in space. Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is world-class based on three major accolades. What is most unusual is the way Datuk Ibrahim signed the work, with just 'Ib', his sobriquet and popularly identified tag, and with a brush too. The work, believed to have been originally owned by a top-ranking British personage in Malaya but back living in Britain then, was sold by a top auction house in Hong Kong. An interesting selling point of this work would be the unusual Ib signature, as he usually signed his canvas in his name in full.
