18th C. British Portrait in Gilt Frame - Giles Hussey

      Est: $5,000 - $7,500

Western Europe, possibly by Giles Hussey (British, 1710-1788) as indicated by the plaque on gilded frame. Portrait of a Lady, oil on canvas, 18th century. A striking portrait of an elegant woman in an equally elegant gilded frame that boasts elaborate openwork and decoration in high relief. This lovely sitter is presented bust-length wearing a scarlet red dress with white ruffled trim. She gazes out at the viewer with her beautiful visage comprised of big brown doe eyes, arched brows, an aquiline nose, pink lips, rosy cheeks, and an updo of golden curls. A plaque on the breathtaking gilt frame is engraved "Giles Hussey 1710-1788". Size (sight view): 30" L x 25" W (76.2 cm x 63.5 cm) Size (frame): 42" L x 37.25" W (106.7 cm x 94.6 cm) About Giles Hussey: Giles Hussey was an 18th century British portrait and history painter from Dorset, England. Hussey lived in Rome from 1732 to 1737 and was admired for his fine draughtsmanship. He studied under Venetian artist Vincenzo Damini who would eventually abandon Hussey in Bologna after taking his property. Fortunately, Hussey met Signor Ghislonzoni, a former ambassador to London who became a great supporter. His portraits were very popular with the exiled Jacobite court and their followers. Hussey created the first portrait of Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender who embodied the Catholic cause in England. Hussey returned to England in 1737 hoping that his new art theories relating math and music to visual art would gain a following. Unfortunately, his theories were not as successful as his painting. Works by Hussey may be found at the Tate Gallery, London, UK and the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, UK. (Marnhull 1710–1788 Broad Hempston) Portrait of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, called Bonnie Prince Charlie (1721–1788), wearing armour and the sash of the order of the Garter, oil on canvas, 25.6 x 21 cm, framed The present painting is one of a number of portraits of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known as the ‘Young Pretender’ or Bonnie Prince Charlie. Hussey worked primarily as a draughtsman, and versions of the portrait in chalk and plumbago include that formerly in the Ilchester collection at Holland House, which has been dated to 1735; that belonging to the Duke of Atholl; and a version formerly in the collection of Lord Montague at Cowdray Park. Two versions in red chalk, showing the head only, are known (British Museum and formerly in the collection of Horace Walpole). Some versions show the Prince in armour, and as a slightly older man than in the present example. A small and damaged example on vellum of this last type was formerly in the collection of Lord Arundell of Wardour and most recently in the collection of Roger Warner. These later likenesses may have been begun by Hussey after the failure of the 1745 rebellion, as a means of raising income by capitalising on the Prince’s romantic status. It was once claimed that Hussey, struggling in poverty, found that repetitions of his likeness of Charles provided his only regular income. This hypothesis is strengthened by an oil painting of Charles in armour by Hussey which is signed and dated 1765. Another version in oil of the present composition was described in the collection of Sir William Meredith in the 1750s (see R. Nicholson, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Making of a Myth: A Study in Portraiture, 1720-1892, Bucknell 2002, p. 56). Hussey, a Catholic who, having been abandoned by his master Vincenzo Damini, was in Rome between 1732 and 1737 in search of patronage, became known for the fine draughtsmanship. His profile portraits in particular proved popular with the exiled Jacobite court and their supporters. His connection to the Stuart family is not known at present – one source suggests he was briefly Charles Edward Stuart’s private secretary. He is known to have drawn both Charles and his father James, the Old Pretender. Hussey became a passionate supporter of the Jacobite movement, and of Charles in particular. His highly-finished portrait drawings became something of a Jacobite ‘icon’’, designed for Stuart supporters both in Britain and in exile on the continent.

He was also a great patron and friend of the composer, subscribed to his editions and commissioned manuscript full scores of his unpublished works for his own use. For a portrait of Jennens by Thomas Hudson, see Handel. A Celebration of his Life and Times, edited by Jacob Simon, National Portrait Gallery (1985), no.181. For an autograph letter by Handel to Jennens, see our sale 5 December 2003, lot 90. Giles Hussey (1710-1788) was an important draughtsman of profile portraits, mainly of Catholic families, and the Young Pretender in particular. He gave up painting in 1767 and retired to Dorset. Although Jennens was himself a staunch Protestant, he was, like Hussey, loyal to the deposed House of Stuart, and had several Jacobite friends and beneficiaries. Included in this lot is a copy of the will of William Jennens (1797), referring to Charles Jennens's estate at Gopsall in Leicestershire. This image is not recorded in the new Dictionary of National Biography (2004).
