AUGUST WILLIAM HUTAF (1874-1972) HOBOKEN / TER-CENTENNARY CELEBRATION. Gouache, pencil, ink and watercolor study. 1929. 19 1/2x14 inches, 49 1/2x35 1/2 cm. Condition A-: water stain in bottom margin. Framed. A native resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, Hutaf was primarily regarded as an illustrator and post card designer, but he was also a painter, potter and poster artist. In 1929 he created a poster-map of Hoboken ("New York's Last Seacoast of Bohemia"), to help two local theatre owners promote their shows. That same year he created this never-published poster in advance of Hoboken's 300th anniversary in 1930. The painting, a "view of New York from Castle Point," with its intriguing colors, is an atypical view of the Manhattan skyline seen from New Jersey. The two prominent pipes framing the image are explained by the text which informs us that Hoboken is the Indian word for tobacco pipe.
