Sidney Hutter Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1954 -

With an undergraduate degree from Illinois State University, Sidney Hutter visited the Pilchuck School in 1975. Four years later, while working on an MFA degree at the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Hutter began experimenting with commercial plate glass to recreate forms of traditional vessels through lamination colored with dyes. The adhesive used to hold the plates together is cured with ultraviolet light. Sidney developed machines specifically needed for cutting, grinding and polishing each sheet of glass. The result of his laminating methods offers the viewer experience with negative and positive spaces that display different forms both inside and outside of the vessel. Museums and collectors of consequence throughout the world treasure Sidney R. Hutter’s glass.

Measures - 18 1/4" high x 10 1/2" wide. Over the years, Sidney Hutter has built up a vocabulary of materials and working processes by researching historical and contemporary glass cold-working and fabrication techniques. This, along with his interest in technological advances of various formulations of commercially available ultraviolet adhesives, dyes and pigments lead to the incorporation of pieces with an amazing spectrum of colors.His sculptures focus on both the exterior and the interior form of the vessel. Sidney Hutter describes volume on the outside while portraying an interior landscape of color and light. By laminating a combination of rough and highly polished surfaces using dyed adhesive, he creates three-dimensional paintings. Each piece is handcrafted and meticulously sculpted to emphasize its unique intersection of form, color and light.
