              Est: RM60,000 - RM110,000

This abstract work by Khalil Ibrahim from 1991 flaunts his proficiency in colours-layering and juxtaposing warm and cool colour palettes in long and repetitive brushstrokes that form a spherical shape that dominates the centre-right of the landscape-format canvas. The background comprises shades of blue, with light blue covering the upper part and a darker shade of blue on the lower section, with an orange straight line across the canvas that creates a sense of balance to the overall composition. Khalil Ibrahim graduated with a National Diploma of Design in Fine Arts at the prestigious St. Martin's School of Art and Design in London in 1964 (post-graduate in 1965). He became a full-time artist in 1966, with a career that spanned over five decades until his demise in 2018. These are copious drawings of figures by Khalil Ibrahim using the fat Montel pen grasped by his left hand, and which had filled innumerable sketchbooks. Such was his telepathy that such scenes just appeared like magic on the paper, without having to refer to any real scene in front. He can be in the market, at home, in a teh-tarik stall chatting with artist friends, or on the bus on a long journey. Therein lay the strengths of Khalil's figures, male or female, that he could start with any part of the anatomy and find the same high level of accomplishments. Often too, a horizontal bar either full or truncated, on top or at the bottom, acts as a stabilizing plank to the 'floating' figures. KHALIL IBRAHIM : East Coast Series - Fishermen, 1987

              Est: RM3,000 - RM7,000

Khalil Ibrahim, a prominent figure in contemporary Malaysian art, is renowned for his evocative depictions of life and landscapes through the lens of his rich cultural heritage. His East Coast Series, particularly the piece titled “Fishermen,” created in 1987, stands as a testament to his deep connection with the natural world and the communities that inhabit it. In “Fishermen,” Ibrahim captures the essence of coastal life, showcasing the daily routines of fishermen as they navigate the rhythms of the sea. The artwork is characterized by vibrant colors and dynamic brushwork, reflecting both the tranquility and turbulence of life by the shore. Ibrahim’s choice of subjects—a group of fishermen—highlights not only their labor but also their integral role in the socio-economic fabric of East Coast Malaysia. The composition often juxtaposes the fishermen against expansive seascapes, drawing attention to the relationship between man and nature. Through this interplay, Ibrahim communicates themes of resilience, community, and the spiritual connection to the sea.

              Khalil Ibrahim (b. 1934 - 2018) East Coast Series, 1998

              Est: RM75,000 - RM130,000

Arguably, one of the finest of the gifted artist Khalil Ibrahim's compositions of his beachhead fishermen works, this large 1998 work in acrylic belies its elegant simplicity and use of Pop colours accentuated with batik patterns on the sarung. Khalil had consummately used acrylic, oil, watercolours, pastels, batik and (Montel) pen with his southpaw flourish of this trademark theme extolling the unsung heroic qualities of the East Coast fishermen fighting the vagaries of weather when venturing far out at sea. Half-naked women in a cluster of differently chromatised vibrant hues dominate the foreground sorting and transporting the catches, while the men loll in the top left corner. Each group has its sinuous rhythms, blessed and grateful for another successful outing / catch, and tomorrow is another day. Khalil Ibrahim's early promise showed when his fishermen painting won 2nd Prize in the Malayan Life national art competition sponsored by Lever Brothers in 1959. Three unexpected things Khalil Ibrahim did on his return from formal art studies in England (six years, extended): 1) He was relieved of his Pahang State scholarship commitments; 2) He initially jettisoned all that he had learnt to concentrate on batik painting, which was then in vogue; 3) He became full time artist immediately. But his tutelage at St. Martins School of Art in London gave him a strong foundation in his figurative, abstract and/or landscapes-urban scenes. He was the first Malaysian to have a solo in Indonesia in 1970, the year he had a double solo at the Samat Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. He was a co-founder of the Malaysian Watercolour Society (Organisation), and featured in its painting expeditions in Sweden and India. In 2004, he celebrated 50 years of painting in the exhibition, A Continued Dialogue, at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur. His works have been collected by the National Museum in Singapore, Fukuoka Museum of Art in Japan, New South Wales Museum of Art in Sydney, and the Royal National Art Gallery of Jordan, etc.

The industrious women of the east coast are captured in their brightly coloured sarongs and headdress. A sense of peace and freedom is evoked through the scene, as the women are walking on the shore of white sand, perhaps finished with the task of the day. There is something sublime, ethereal and yes, perhaps, even a little spiritual about the Expressionistic abstract works created by that master Malaysian artist – Khalil Ibrahim. Ever since his art apprenticeship in 1960s England (at St.Martin’s School of Art, central London) meeting Malaysian abstract/ expressionist artist Ibrahim Hussein (known for Gardu – 1968 and My Father the Astronaut – 1970) and, later, meeting with Malaysian Expressionist painter/poet Latiff Mohidin (famous for his Pago Pago series) – there had been a distinctly abstract undercurrent to many of Khalil Ibrahim’s works. There seems little doubt that studying at an English art school, learning fresh ways of seeing, coupled with having contact with artists discovering new approaches to their art and lives, changed the way Khalil approached his own artistic works.

Khalil painted and sketched a number of portraits. However with the passing years, he often challenged the transient nature of human existence. Although Khalil has seldom been discussed as a portrait painter, he produced a large number of portraits in a variety of media. In many of his portraits, the palette has been composed of pure hues. In his studies of models, while at St Martin’s he adopted a much more academic style, using naturalistic colours as seen in Model in St. Martin’s 1964 wherein he draws attention to the face by merging the rest of the body to the background. The rigorous teaching of portraiture at the academy ensured that students learnt to be excellent technicians as the distinctive character of the academy was to produce artists who would portray their subjects with powerful simplicity. Freedom to control interpretation has been essential to Khalil and many of his studies are from reception of unnamed subjects whom he had encountered in passing. Khalil responded strongly to people who were graceful and exotic and often portrayed them through colour. Khalil only painted two self-portraits of himself in 1965 and later again in 1999 but instead through the very nature of portraiture, he investigated the humanity of his models. Khalil’s portraits are characterised not by their stylistic consistency, but rather by change – quite as much as the other genres in which he has worked.

              Est: RM8,000 - RM12,000

This absolutely simple piece executed by mere ink on paper is a surefire to understand an artist’s expertise in art. With the simplest of mediums, Khalil Ibrahim drew a group of village folk amidst a gathering. Using only the basics of black ink, it is an insight to Khalil’s skill and knowledge of his subjects and his own techniques, and the end-product is something simply dramatic and effective. Although it may seem quick and haphazard, it is a sign that it takes a lot of practice and talent to be able to create a piece that is simple yet artistic.

Khalil Ibrahim was skilled in painting the human figure, and these compositions show a unique configuration of postures, gestures and stances. His most well-loved themes are the people of the East Coast in the fishing village. His watercolours are just as delightful and detailed as his full-blown paintings, exhibiting a fascination for the human figure. Khalil was a co-founder of the Malaysian Watercolour Society and had his first double solo of London works and Malaysian batiks at Samat Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 1970. That year, he also had a solo exhibition in Indonesia, the first Malaysian to have done so. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Switzerland and his works have been collected by the National Museum in Singapore, Fukuoka Museum of Art in Japan, New South Wales Museum of Art in Sydney, and the Royal National Art Gallery of Jordan.

The figure forms here are looser and more fragmented, ambiguous even, with some colours bleeding into one another, compared to his normal renditions. It's another of Khalil Ibrahim's beach scene, though the gender of the figures seems less obvious, and what they are doing is also left to conjecture: are they hauling net, perhaps, or something else? The limbs are summarily rendered. This is one rare work where Khalil plays with discoloration to dissemble distinct outlines. Khalil Ibrahim had the distinction of not really having to serve back the government after winning a Pahang State scholarship to study Art (National Diploma of Design in Fine Arts) at St. Martin's School of Art in London. He won the scholarship on the merit of his painting of a fisherman which won 2nd Prize in the Malayan Life national art competition in 1959. He had been a fulltime artist since his return in September 1966. It was one solo after another since his first in 1970 held at the Samat Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, of his batiks and watercolours. That year, 1970, he also exhibited in Indonesia, arguably the first Malaysian to have done so. He was also a co-founder of the Malaysian Watercolour Society, having joined the painting expeditions to Sweden (Simrikshawn to Uppsala) and India (New Delhi to Nainital / Joelikot). However, he could not paint much after suffering a stroke in 2012. Khalil was honored with the exhibition A Continued Dialogue, at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur, in 2004.

It's a beguiling tonal matrix of verticals and horizontals, with the disguised half-naked feminine figures towering over the central composition and the ‘wavy' patterns of the sarong and accentuated lower torso shapes giving an animated sway and sense of movement. The figures are embodied in the different colour play, without the usual outlines in this Khalil Ibrahim's shadow forms shown in different postures, front or back or side, albeit with his deft choreography of colours. This intricate work from the East Coast Series depicts a picturesque and idyllic scene, highlighting the lives of the local fishing community. Dressed in delicate sarongs, the artist depicts a group of women on the beach. One of the best southpaws in Malaysian art, Khalil Ibrahim was sent on a Pahang government scholarship to study art at the St. Martin's School of Art and Design in London in 1959-1964, for his National Diploma in Design. He was already 30 when he graduated. He spent another year for his post-graduate in 1965. After a very brief teaching stint on his return, he was released from his bond, and he decided to turn full time, and he has been painting fulltime since 1966. In 1970, he was given his first solo at the Samat Art Gallery, of his batiks and watercolours, and he also had a solo exhibition in Indonesia that year. Khalil was a co-founder of the Malaysian Watercolour Society and rose to vice-president once. One of his main exhibitions is Khalil Ibrahim: A Continued Dialogue, held at Galeri Petronas in 2004.

Khalil demonstrates his skill at capturing the beauty of the beaches that line the east coast, dominated by local fishermen. This scene evokes the feelings of communal life, showing fishermen dressed in sarongs working diligently. The variations of subtle colours build up to form an arresting scene of a beach at low tide. Another notable masterpiece from Khalil Ibrahim is his ‘Vivacity Series, 2010’. The image shows the life of the locals in the East Coast as they go about their lives. Based on the use of dark colours of mainly blue, grey and black, one can assume that the art is portraying a night scene. Despite the ambiguity and the limited range of colours used for this piece, Khalil is still able to express the atmosphere and ambience of the setting. His mastery in outlining the silhouettes of the figures in a clean and smooth manner makes the art even more intriguing to see. One can’t help but wonder what each of the figures is really doing in this scene.
