        Est: RM6,000 - RM10,000

One of the central themes of Mustapa Haji Ibrahim’s works are the components of nature at its core, merged with symbolic attributes such as monoliths, stone carvings, vegetation, and clouds. Senja Transparen (Radiant Sunset) is one of Mustapa’s poetic abstract compositions from the early 1970s emanating with life force. There is a sense of lyrical rhythm and motion conveyed through curvilinear shapes that continually shift, yet the composition is held together by a harmonious interplay of animated forms and colours. MUSTAPHA IBRAHIM : Melepaskan Mama di Pekat Kabus, 1971

        Est: RM7,500 - RM15,000

Mustapha Ibrahim was born in 1946 in Bagan Datok, Perak. He received his early education in Gombak Lane School and attended night classes at Sekolah Menengah Maxwell, Kuala Lumpur. He was one of the artists who was directly involved in the establishment of the Kumpulan Anak Alam in 1974. Until now, he is loyal to the simple way of life practiced by the members of Kumpulan Anak Alam. Mustapha Ibrahim was often associated with the activities of the Kumpulan Anak Alam but in actual fact, he started painting classes organised by the Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia (APS) at Studio Taman Budaya, Jalan Ampang in the late 1960’s. His early development saw him more of a portrait and scenery painter. On the subject of naturalism, he grew increasingly aware that the painting is not expressly limited to only about nature, but also of the essence or spirit of the universe itself. Mustapha liked to create a variety of work in serial forms.

Mustapa Haji Ibrahim (b. Perak, 1946) Untitled, 2005

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

One of the central themes of Mustapa Haji Ibrahim’s works are the components of nature at its core. Influenced by the flowing biomorphic forms derived from the earth, Mustapa delves into the awan larat motif in the central plane accompanied by a crescent moon. The playful use of undulating contours resembling microscopic organisms contribute to a new found consciousness of traditional symbolic content. By using an intense colour palette and subtle gradations of tones, the artist succeeds in creating a sense of vitalism. Mustapa Haji Ibrahim enrolled in Gombak Lane School, Gombak, Selangor in 1951, and Maxwell Secondary School, Kuala Lumpur in 1964. He attended art classes with Mazli Mat Som, and was a member of the Kumpulan Anak Alam. He held his first solo exhibition at British Council Kuala Lumpur in 1973. His fourth solo exhibition was titled Mustapa Haji Ibrahim, Paintings, 1968 – 2008 held at RA Fine Arts in 2008.

The naked figurines seem straight out of Zulkifli Dahalan’s (1952-1977) magnum opus, Separate Reality: One Day In A Forbidden Land (1975) except that they are all over floating in limbo, instead of on terra firma. Anak Alam members close to both had said that both were developing the figures at about the same time, so it’s difficult to ascertain who put them down on paper / canvas first, but Zulkifli’s figure types could be traced back specifically to 1972. Mustapa’s trajectory seems more on a patterning kind of thing, as he had done with his later jig-saw-like abstracts, and which in the 1970s he dubbed his Love Series. Mustapa Ibrahim, better known as Tapa, is a founding member of the Anak Alam group which splintered from the figurative-bound Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia, of which he was also a member (he attended APS classes with Mazli Mat Som). Apart from art, he was also involved in poetry and theatre during the 1970s. Among his notable exhibitions are the two-man show in Medan in 1971, and the Dwi Rupa exhibition in 1996 with S. Amin Shahab, Ghaffar Ibrahim and Prof Siti Zainon Ismail. He was also selected for the Asean Modern Painting Exhibition in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1983. After his first solo at the British Council, Kuala Lumpur, in 1973, Tapa had his fourth solo at RA Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur in 2008.

Mustapa Haji Ibrahim (b. 1946) Arca Kabut Warna (1), 1983

Mustapa Haji Ibrahim began painting a series of abstract work in the 1970s called Siri Cinta, which depicted biomorphic and organic forms. He often titled each painting after nature’s poetic asceticism that signified his inner feelings. On offer is an abstract painting that illustrates an exaggerated image of a living organism in cotton-candy hues of pastel blue, pink and white, set against a grid background in black. Mustapa Haji Ibrahim has been active in the local art scene since the 1960s when he began painting at Angkatan Pelukis Se-Malaysia (APS)’s Studio Taman Budaya, Jalan Ampang. He was also one of the founding members of Anak Alam - established on May 1, 1974 - alongside Latiff Mohidin, Maryam Abdullah, Ali “Mabuha” Rahamad, and Mohd Yusoff Osman. Four of the Anak Alam members regrouped to present an exhibition called Tunjang at the Creative Space of the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2016.
