Date: 19th century Description: Satirical depiction of full-length figures. A miller and his donkey arrive at an inn, where they are served refreshments by an innkeeper and his daughter. This could be a design for the illustration of a short picture story, many of which are known to have been penned by Ille. Some were published as xylographs in the "Münchener Bilderbogen" series. An elegantly dressed young gentleman and a soldier with a helmet and sabre shake hands and apparently agree on the fate of a young woman who can be seen in the centre of the background. Above the depiction is an unrecognisable inscription: "Fräulein[?] III". It could be a design for the illustration of a short picture story, many of which are known to have been penned by Ille.         Eduard Valentin Joseph Karl Ille (1823 Munich - 1900 ibid.): Satirical portrayal of the Hussite legend outside Naumburg, 19th century, Pen drawing Technique: Washed Pen drawing over Pencil on Paper Inscription: Inscribed on the verso by another hand with "Ille, Die Hussiten vor Naumburg". Date: 19th century Description: Satirical depiction of the legend of the Hussite siege of Naumburg in 1432, during which a teacher and his pupils in penitent robes went to the gates of the city to appease the besiegers. In commemoration of the peaceful outcome, the "Naumburg Hussite Cherry Festival" is celebrated to this day. In a series of full-length depictions, the kneeling pupils with chalkboard and bouquet of flowers can be seen behind their humbly bowing teacher in penitential robes with bundles of brushwood. On the right, heavily armed and guarded by a large dog, sits the Hussite commander Andreas Prokop (c. 1380-1434) with a grim soldier behind him.         Eduard Valentin Joseph Karl Ille (1823 Munich - 1900 ibid.): "The 18th October 1813", The Battle of Leipzig, Napoleonic Wars, Wars of Liberation, 19th century, Pen drawing Technique: Washed Pen drawing and Pencil on Paper Inscription: Inscribed at the bottom of the banner "Der achzehnde Okdover 1813.". The allies Russia, Austria, Prussia and Sweden fought against Napoleon and his Grande Armée in Leipzig from 16 to 19 October 1813. The 18th October depicted in this illustration ultimately brought victory over Napoleon with more than 90,000 soldiers killed or injured. Napoleon himself, the defeated emperor, is depicted in the centre - flags and eagles at the lower edge of the picture are the traces of his reign - as well as the monarchs Alexander I of Russia, Francis I of Austria and Frederick William III of Prussia, who were allied against Napoleon and represent the victory over the revolution embodied by Napoleon, next to him and in the background.         Eduard Valentin Joseph Karl Ille (1823 Munich - 1900 ibid.): Literary illustration, king, knight and nobleman, c. 1850, Pen drawing Technique: Washed Pen drawing and Pencil on Paper Date: c. 1850 Description: Inscribed "Hdz. 3004 / Ille" in pencil on the verso. Original drawing by the hand of the artist Eduard Ille, who was much in demand during his lifetime; Ille was a painter and talented draughtsman who knew how to utilise his talent in the fields of illustration, caricature and writing. About the artist's life: Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Moritz von Schwind; proficient with both the pen and the drawing pencil, he worked for many years as a permanent contributor to the Munich magazines "Fliegende Blätter" and "Münchener Bilderbogen", to which Wilhelm Busch also contributed; he played a major role in the extraordinary success of the "Fliegende Blätter", of which he became co-editor in 1863 - his caricaturistic depictions of the Biedermeier period were very popular; colleague of Lothar Meggendorfer and Edmund Harburger; in 1865 he painted a cycle "Aus Aus der Biedermeier" for Ludwig II. of Bavaria in 1865, he painted a cycle "From German Legend and History in Watercolours" in Berg Castle on Lake Starnberg; to this day, his wall paintings of Walther von der Vogelweid's songs adorn the king's dressing room at Neuschwanstein Castle; honoured with the title of professor by the Munich Academy in 1868.
