            Nov. 30, 2024

            Abdulmari Imao (1936 - 2014) - Sarimanok

            Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Sarimanok signed and dated 2010 (lower left) acrylic on canvas 48” x 30” (122 cm x 76 cm) The sarimanok is featured heavily in Abdulmari Imao’s oeuvre. The first and so far only Muslim Filipino National Artist, Imao exalts the Indigenous culture of the Philippine south as he incorporates traditional motifs in his work like he does in this 2010 Sarimanok. With broad swathes of colors and thick black outlines, Imao’s Sarimanok is among the artist’s lively depictions of the celestial rooster. He uses curving, definite lines to portray the legendary creature, a mythical bird that finds itself lodged amongst many other Southeast Asian myths and legends, with one such creature including the serpent naga of Malaysia. With this particular Sarimanok, Imao employs brightly captivating colors that command attention with each block of colors. The delicate balance between the vibrant colors and the traditional themes creates an almost seamless melding of native and contemporary. It is a portrayal of the Indigenous Philippine culture that is different from the common illustration of the pastoral Tagalog countryside, setting his works apart from the multiple genre pieces of his time and establishing a truly unique Filipino identity, and acting as a cultural bridge between the region and the country. Sarimanok Series signed (lower left) acrylic on canvas 36" x 24" (91 cm x 61 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP: Imao's artistic journey is particularly notable for his incorporation of the Sarimanok, a motif that traces its origins to the story of a celestial rooster in the first of seven heavens. This motif resonates across various Southeast Asian cultures, finding parallels in the serpent naga of Malaysia, among other examples. These thematic linkages set Imao's practice apart within the Philippine art community, establishing it as something uniquely and authentically his own. Imao's artistic expressions pulsate with life, energy, and an unwavering passion for creation. His featured work, adorned with bright, vivid, and arresting colors, captivates the observer. The palette he employs not only tickles the eyes but also commands attention, each block of color enticing the senses. What makes Imao's art truly exceptional is the delicate balance that exists among these vibrant elements—a harmonious unity that speaks to his artistic mastery. One can appreciate how Imao seamlessly combines traditional motifs with contemporary vibrancy. His art becomes a visual symphony that transcends cultural boundaries, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the rich narratives and shared mythologies that connect the diverse cultures of Southeast Asia. Abdulmari Imao's Sarimanok becomes not just a masterpiece but a cultural bridge that spans the collective heritage of the region. (Jed Daya)

Abdulmari Imao (1936 - 2014) Sarimanok Series signed and dated 2009 brass 29" x 11" x 7" (74 cm x 28 cm x 18 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Mr. Toym de Leon Imao confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Manila The art of National Artist for Visual Arts Abdulmari Imao possesses four distinct and interrelated themes: Islamic calligraphy, sarimanok, sarimosque (a design combining the forms of the sarimanok and the mosque), and the sari-okir (a combination of the sarimanok and the okir/okil, foliage patterns in curvilinear/ rectilinear designs and is particularly associated with the Maranaos). Imao employs the sari-mosque in this particular piece, as evident in the Islamic dome situated atop the head of the legendary bird. Imao exhibits his profound knowledge and understanding of his Islamic heritage. In Islamic architecture, the dome of mosques is the symbolic representation of the vault of heaven in Islam. It is also evocative of a later Maranao legend that tells of the story of the Prophet Muhammad going to the seven heavens and discovering in the first heaven a bird so large that its crest touches the second heaven. It is said that when the bird stops crowing, the Day of Reckoning (yawm alqiyāmah, literally “Day of Resurrection”) comes. Imao did not hastily incorporate the sarimanok into his oeuvre; he deliberately studied and did research first on the legendary bird so as to remain faithful to its essence while incorporating his distinct touch. In a 1969 interview with fellow National Artist Nick Joaquin, Imao says: “I have been working on the sarimanok style. This is a design I am trying to improve, revitalize. That is why I have been doing research on this Muslim motif: to develop it into another design, which will be distinctively Muslim.” The sarimanok has become a cultural trademark not only of Muslim Filipinos but the entire nation as well. As Imao had remarked: “The sarimanok is a bird of exquisite beauty and unique enchantment, a mythic creature with a fish in its beak or claws. Today, the sarimanok is no longer exclusive to Maranao culture. It is now part and parcel of the whole Filipino heritage, truly representative of Filipino culture.” (A.M.)

Today, the sarimanok is no longer exclusive to Maranao culture. It is now part and parcel of the whole Filipino heritage, truly representative of Filipino culture.” — ABDULMARI IMAO Abdulmari Asia Imao, known for his fusion of Eastern mystical and ornamental motifs with the Western technique of Cubism, and is considered as the most “Asian” of National Artists, pioneered the practice use of recurring folk motifs from his Sulu heritage thus resulting in the creation and successful usage of folk themes beyond the cliched appropriation of genre scenes common in the Philippines hence the creation of colorful abstract pieces depicting the fusion of traditional Islamic design with modernist patterns. Imao’s art emanates a triumphant force as seen on this sculpture of a sarimanok - essentially a link to that story of a rooster in the first of seven heavens wherein that same motif persists in different Southeast Asian cultures - the serpent naga of Malaysia, the most evident example. These regional thematic linkages set the practice of Imao apart in the Philippine art community as something truly unique. The mythical steel bird appears like a shining trophy atop the steel fish. Both the figures are united in their intricate carvings that emphasize the creature’s lush, fluid curves. In an interview, Imao notes, “Art is a sense of order and harmony,” Imao declared, “and to be a good artist, one must have the right attitude toward his interests and associates. In his works his life is reflected, and it is necessary that an artist must be generally well-informed and be interested in other related artistic fields.” With these words, Imao exhibited distinct qualities that merited him to be the first Muslim National Artist. And the featured work, a testament on how Imao effortlessly fuses Mindanaon motifs, modern mediums and forms, and the victorious Filipino spirit into one.

His most familiar motif, for example, the Sarimanok is essentially a link to that story of a rooster in the first of seven heavens. That same motif persists in different Southeast Asian cultures - the serpent naga of Malaysia, the most evident example. These regional thematic linkages set the practice of Imao apart in the Philippine art community as something truly unique. Imao’s art remained as animated as ever, full of life, energy, and hunger to create. The colors that grace this feature work are bright, vivid, and arresting. His palette tickles the eyes, each block of color commanding attention, seducing the senses, yet all elements balance each other, the epitome of harmony and unity. No wonder in a 2013 interview, Imao declared that “Art is a sense of order and harmony… and to be a good artist, one must have the right attitude toward his interests and associates. In his works, his life is reflected, and it is necessary that an artist must be generally well-informed and be interested in other related artistic fields.” Imao had exhibited distinct qualities that merited him to be the first Muslim National Artist. A native of the Philippine’s southernmost region of Sulu, Imao is no stranger to the vibrant culture and practices of Muslim Mindanao. His interest in art first started in 1954 when a floating art exposition docked at Sulu. Artist Tomas Bernardo saw Imao’s fascination with the exhibit and urged him to take his chances in Manila. Imao unfortunately fell short of the University of the Philippines Diliman’s scholarship program, barring him from admission due to his lack of funds. But Imao was a man of stalwart determination. Thus, he marched himself to the Malacanang in order to ask for aid from President Ramon Magsaysay. He was met by one of Magsaysay’s appointees, Secretary Jose Maria Ansaldo, who decide to help him get into the University of The Philippines Diliman’s College of Fine Art. Under the tutelage of a number of Filipino masters such as Napoleon Abueva, Anastacio Caedo, and Guillermo Tolentino, Imao managed to hone his craft by combining traditional techniques with Moro elements. His unique practice eventually led him abroad where he pursued further studies, in North America and in Europe. Today, Imao is celebrated for his unique use of Muslim influences such as Islamic calligraphy, traditional Lumad colors, and the iconic curved motifs found in indigenous Mindanaoan architecture. Fusing Islamic design and symbols and ornamental motifs with Cubism techniques, he popularized the indigenous geometric flowing design or the ukkil, the serpent or the naga. This particular piece showcases one of Imao’s most iconic subjects, the sarimanok. A mythological creature found in a number of Mindanaoan cultures, the sarimanok is said to symbolize good fortune. The inherent subtext behind the sarimanok’s importance is emphasized in Imao’s clean lines and overall technicolor palette, effectively signifying that better days are yet to come.
