George Inness "Pastoral Landscape" oil on canvas, 1857. Initialed and dated lower left, "G. I. 1857". Canvas: 26"H x 36"W; Frame: 38.25"H x 48.25"W. PROVENANCE: Pearle Houston, Wichita, Kansas. W.C. Findlay, Kansas City. Berry-Hill Galleries, New York (ca. 1985-1986). Mr. Burns, Michigan (acquired from the above in 1986). Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York. From the Collection of Mrs. Charles J. Wyly, Jr., Dallas, Texas (acquired from the above in 1998). LITERATURE: Michael Quick, Catalogue Raisonné, no. 101 (Pl. 32, Illustrated p. 128). NOTE: George Inness is one of the most highly celebrated painters of American landscape from the 19th century. Drawing influence from Theodore Rousseau and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, he departed from the dramatic, large scale vistas of the Hudson River School and opted for more subdued and glorified depictions of nature. Rather than illustrating scenes of man engulfed by his rugged and unruly environment, Inness portrayed quiet scenes of his innate oneness with nature. His landscapes exude a poetic softness and tranquility that show mankind and God's creation coexisting in harmony. As illustrated here in, "Pastoral Landscape", the trees and fields glow in a post-dawn mist as two men relax at the center of the scene, in peaceful, unencumbered existence with their surroundings. George Inness (American, 1825-1894). Please note: We will not be accepting bids on this lot via internet bidding. Please contact the gallery to register for bidding.

George Inness, Jr. "Venice" Painting Oil on Board

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

George Inness, Jr.( American, 1854-1926), "Venice" oil on board initialed lower right "GI Jr." and dated 187(2), accompanied by a letter written by the artist, dated and titled April 5, 1869, Brooklyn, NY, most likely when he was studying at Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn, NY. It is written to his friend Milton expressing his wish to visit with his friend in the country but "I am plodding along at school as usual getting my education". His mother asks him to convey her love "to Mrs. Turnure and the baby" and he closes by asking his friend to come on the weekend "and we can go up to Prospect Park. From your friend G. Innes". Board: 7" high, 5 1/2" wide. Condition: crazing, losses, board bowed. The date on this painting is significant, as it relates to a period when the artist is known to have been living in Italy painting with his father, noted landscape artist George Inness (the family returned to America in 1875, with father and son sharing studio space by 1878). Even as a young artist, he included “Jr.” after his signature to differentiate himself from his father’s forceful personality and style. The offered work is initialed as noted above, and while many accepted examples are signed “Inness Jr.”, this painting relates closely to his known signatures in the manner in which the “jr” is formed. As this appears to be an early work by a 17–18 year old artist–in–training, an initialed rather than spelled out signature seems plausible.

GEORGE INNESS JR. (American, 1854-1926) Golden Afternoon, circa 1919 Oil on canvas 21-1/2 x 25-1/2 inches (54.6 x 64.8 cm) Signed and dated illegibly lower left: Inness Jr. __ Signed on stretcher verso: Inness Jr. PROVENANCE: LeRoy Ireland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Private collection, Houston, Texas, acquired from the above, 1957; Schweitzer Gallery, New York; Bob Inness, Dallas, acquired from the above, 1969. Although George Inness, Jr., continued the Tonalist landscape tradition of his more famous father, he distinguished himself as a painter of animals and religious scenes. Born in Paris, Inness studied academic painting under Leon Bonnat, yet his mature subject matter, notably shepherds or peasants in atmospheric landscapes, recalls the work of the Realist artists Jean-François Millet and Jules Breton. Golden Afternoon, originally in the collection of the Inness scholar LeRoy Ireland, is the finest of his pastoral works to come to auction. Here, a golden-pink sunset spotlights an amorous shepherd and shepherdess as they stroll in a verdant pasture. Inness successfully exhibits his facility in modeling animals, evoking the Christian theme of a shepherd caring for his flock, and creating a moody Tonalist study of shadowed fields and cloudy skies.
