    C1850 Oil Painting of Summer attr. to James Inskipp (1790-1868) James Inskipp must have done well in the commissariat service, retiring at 30 when he began to paint. he exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Society of British Artists. He also illustrated the 1833-1836 edition of the Compleat Angler by William Walton. Works by Inskipp are held in the British Government Art Collection, among others. This picture of a girl holding a wheat sheaf is more likely to be an allegory of Summer than an actual portrait.The canvas is stamped on the back with the oval stamp of J Harvey of 15 Catherine St, The Strand, London. This stamp is recorded as used in the 1850s. Inskipp is also written on the back of the canvas, clearly long ago. A possible signature or cypher lower left is illegible to me. However, the similarities of this painting to others such as the boy illustrated suggest this is a reasonable attribution. Frame 73 cm by 62 cm
