His carving style evolved over the years, starting with his earliest known sculpture carved in 1951 which was more minimalist than his later works. Just a few years later his works had become embellished with ivory and soap inlay and incised details into rounded stone bodies (see previous lot). Into the 1960s he experimented with enlarged features such as ears and breasts and hands (see Inuit Art Quarterly, Summer 1990, cover image). As demonstrated in this fine work, by the early 1970s his signature characteristics have been smoothed and refined, proportions are more balanced and he gives attention to hair and clothing detail through carving rather than insetting. The overall mass of this work challenges sculptural conventions, in that the artist did not sacrifice precision for size, it’s mass is not a gimmick but rather an expression of the emphasis the artist places on the mother and her child, making this work truly a sculptural triumph.George Swinton aptly describes Inukpuk’s sculptural form in this excerpt from Sculpture of the Eskimo: “This sculpture exemplifies form - form which transforms fact and expresses sensations and ideas. Every single part breathes life and strength, so that meanings do not emanate as much from its imagery as from the abundant, excrescent shapes and the over-size volumes that are so closely related to each other, producing a fugue-like structure of roundnesses [sic]. These are Johnny’s personal style characteristics. The artist has found a unique form to express his emotions, impressions, and ideas.”Estimate: $30,000—40,000

Johnny Inupuk's "concern for the details of daily life has been a trademark” characteristic, as is his work's “rounded, voluptuous forms that appear almost inflated”. Ivory, soap and melted records inset into drilled out holes for eyes, mouths and clothing details began to appear in his carvings around 1952. Influenced by Inukpuk’s commercial success, the community made use of his style of carving and it became the dominant look in Inukjuak. Darlene Coward Wight names Inukpuk one of the best known of the “early masters”, pointing to the length and success of his career.Estimate: $5,000—7,000
