*** Oil on canvas Unsigned We would like to thank the artist's family for confirming the authenticity of this work, which will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently in preparation. » Benamar Médiène, in Algérie expressions multiples, Cahiers de l’Adeiao, Mai, 1987 p.22. A talented, prolific and generous artist, M'hamed Issiakhem destroyed many works and donated many without bothering to catalogue them. He is considered one of the founders of modern Algerian painting, belonging to a generation of artists and writers in the 1930s for whom artistic creation and the challenge to the colonial order were inseparable. Tragedy, the central theme of his work, has its roots in a personal tragedy: in 1943, a grenade he was handling exploded, killing two of his sisters and a nephew, and amputating his left arm. This injury had a profound effect on the man and his artistic career. He says it was ‘by chance’ that he walked through the door of the Société des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, where he settled in 1947. He went on to study engraving at the École Estienne in Paris, then painting at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1953. Finally, he won a scholarship to the Casa Velázquez in Madrid. Overcoming his handicap, he developed a virtuosity in painting and engraving that won the admiration of his contemporaries. After independence, he became a major figure on the Algerian art scene. A founding member of the Union nationale des arts plastiques, he became involved in cultural and political projects, designing banknotes, stamps and film sets. He actively contributed to the construction of a modern national cultural identity, while remaining true to his distinctive style, often centred on female figures symbolising suffering and resilience. His work, imbued with pain and social reflection, reflects his deep commitment to justice. His latest works, such as The Pregnant Woman and Mother Courage (1984), produced while he was battling cancer, bear witness to his unwavering passion for painting."

        Jun. 28, 2024

        M'hamed ISSIAKHEM (Taboudoucht 1928 - Alger 1985) Couple

*** Oil on panel Signed lower left Provenance : French private collection, gift from the artist, in June 1974. We would like to thank the artist's family for confirming the authenticity of the work. *** This vertical work depicts a hieratic couple in a narrow space where the woman, the backbone of the work, stands back and above the man. A delicate balance of forces is established in this composition of muted tones, where the red of the headdresses - the only touch of colour - binds the two figures together, as does the clarity of their faces. Anissa Bouayed writes: "The painter M'hamed Issiakhem worked all his life to unearth the soul of his people, to reveal their profound truth through the faces and textures that surround them. He fought relentlessly against snobbery in art, against this "entre soi" busy with long chats about works supposedly too complex to be understood by the people" in M'hamed Issiakhem, Tribute exhibition from 1 December 2010 to 31 January 2011, Fiac 2010. Here, the artist paints the powerful and intimate bonds of two united souls, a veritable allegory of father and mother, of the Algerian man and woman, and reveals the ability of a couple / a people to stand together, even in the midst of suffering. This work resonates deeply with the artist's personal life.
