1967 | technique: assemblage and oil on board | 71 x 50 cm | signature: bottom right | framed Lot description This painting by Josef Istler from 1967 is an important example of the artist's experimental approach to painting and assemblage technique. Istler, one of the key representatives of Czech surrealism and informal, uses here a combination of oil paints and structured surfaces, thereby creating a work with a deep spatial effect and sensory plasticity. The textures and relief in the painting evoke organic forms that seem to emerge from a dark, green background, creating an impression of movement and mysterious energy. The work is an example of his fascination with matter, the process of creation and the possibilities of expressing invisible structures beneath the surface of things, which is typical of the author's work of the 1960s.

Bažina's informel based composition belongs to a cycle from the mid-1940s, which arose in collaboration with the Ra group, which brought together Czech surrealists. Josef Istler found his own painting language where he used various symbols and imaginative grouping of elements to create drama. At the same time, he was not afraid to outline the themes of the horrors of war and the weight of human destiny. From tried and tested themes and concrete elements, he moved towards abstraction. ABANDONED NEST 1967 Mixed media - assemblage and oil on wooden panel, 70,5x50 cm, signed and dated lower right "Istler 67". "For Alexandr Skalicky, this artist was a living memory of the interwar and postwar avant-garde, whose work he considered a model of modern domestic art of the second half of the twentieth century. In the 1970s, when Skalicky visited Istler, this artist, a member of the CoBrA group, was a reminder of the better times when domestic art was part of international events." /Patek 2022/ Skalicky admired Istler`s work. He has a lot of his works in high quality in the collection. Thanks to Istler and his cooperation, Informel becomes the main motif of the entire art collection. Framed. Provenance: The collection of Alexandr Skalicky.

Josef Istler was one of the leading representatives of Czech surrealism and Czech informel. He progressed from more readable themes to abstractions, shape metaphors, and chaotic structures. He experimented extensively with techniques and language of painting, and it is precisely the diversity of his work that creates an extremely interesting artwork for collectors. He transformed the gloomy war theme into dark constructions with hints of buildings, immersed himself in his own self, and created works with a play of lights and hints of cosmic elements. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Lower right "Istler 61"

Josef Istler found his own painting language, where he used various symbols and imaginative groupings of elements to create drama. At the same time, he was not afraid to outline the themes of the horrors of war and the burden of human destiny. He rejected the descriptiveness of art and condensed his new order of things through the rhythm of his artistic language. He even applies the paint violently and in the same way it disrupts it and creates new layers. He moved from proven themes and contextual elements to abstraction. Josef Istler was significantly influenced by the meeting with Toyen and K. Teige and was a founding member of the Ra Group. Technique: Oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: Lower right "Istler"
