          ANDREW JACKSON (1767-1845) Seventh President of the United States, "Old Hickory" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. His signature "Andrew Jackson" and again "A J" on a small slip removed from a letter with several lines in his hand including a short postscript: "P.S. I am quite feeble yet and much afflicted AJ". Usual folds, irregular margins, else very good. Offered together with LEVI WOODBURY (1789 - 1851) who served as Jackson's Naval and later Treasury Secretary. A.L.S. as Secretary of the Navy 1p. 4to., [Washington], Dec. 12, 1831 to Capt. George W. Rodgers enclosing "orders and instructions [not present]..." Usual folds, else very good; EDWARD LIVINGSTON (1764 - 1836) Secretary of State under Jackson. Manuscript D.S., a check for $87.50 drawn on the Bank of the United States payable to "W. P. Farrand or order." Cut cancellations affect signature, else very good. Together, three pieces.

Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Aug. 12, 1835, a scallop-top ship's paper permitting the Brig Blucher [?] of Boston with a lade of 210 tons and no guns to pass freely with passengers and goods. Countersigned by JOHN FORSYTH as Secretary of State. Loosely matted and set into a carved frame. Usual folds, light wear, overall very good condition.

          VAN BUREN, MARTIN Eighth President of the United States (1782-1862, served 1837-41); Secretary of State and Vice President under Jackson, becoming his close ally and chosen successor; earlier, Governor and US Senator from New York. Brief Autograph Letter Signed "M.V. Buren," 2/3 page, 4to, Kinderhook, NY, May 4, 1825. To an unnamed recipient, he quickly writes regarding his brother, Lawrence Van Buren, who holds "a bond and mortgage" of "Ananias Barton, on which there is due eight hundred & ninety four dollars & twenty five cents which I have indorsed on a bond & mortgage I hold agt. said Lawrence." Some blotting of last word. Age-toned, with edge wear and a few small dampstains, otherwise in very good condition. Lawrence Van Buren had been an officer in the War of 1812. At the time of this letter, Martin Van Buren was just emerging as a leader in the US Senate, and began to act as head of the de facto opposition during the administration of John Quincy Adams.
