John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) Stallion and Jack Fighting 1943 The lithograph from an edition of 250 prints published by Associated American Artists is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled verso by the original AAA publisher's label. Fair condition. The AAA was founded by Reeves Lewenthal in 1934 with the idea of bringing art by prominent American artists into the homes of everyday people at a time when original artwork was out of reach for many. The model proved to be a win-win situation that lasted for more than 60 years. It allowed artists to earn income at a time when many were struggling due to the economic hardships of the Great Depression, while also providing the general public with affordable access to art. The concept also made the arts more inclusive overall during a challenging period in American history. Image measures 12 x 15.5, sheet is 13.5 x 17 inches. JAMES THURBER (1894-1961) The War Between Men and Women. Animation cel setup from the Thurber biopic starring Jack Lemon, 1972. 9 x 12 inches. This is a production cel setup (animation cel over watercolor background) of two rival dictator figures from an animated sequence based on James Thurber's classic 1939 parable The Last Flower, which appeared near the end of the 1972 Thurber biopic The War Between Men and Women. The sequence was produced at Playhouse Pictures by the animation talents of Dale Case, Robert Dranko, and Mark Kausler. The animation for this film was designed to closely mirror James Thurber's style, and this setup is a quite faithful depiction of the warmongering "Liberators" in Thurber's original book.
