        JEFFREYS, Thomas (c. 1719-1771). A Plan of the Town and Fort of Carillon at Ticonderoga; with the Attack made by the British Army commanded by Gen. Abercrombie, 8 July 1758. Engraved map. London, c. 1758. 15 3/4" x 20 1/2" sheet, 27 1/2" x 32" framed. An attractively engraved, extremely detailed plan of the historic Fort on Lake Champlain ("the key to the Continent"), known as Fort Carillon to the French. It shows the surrounding terrain and the lines of the French and English armies during the unsuccessful British assault. Entrenchments to the East of the Fort were manned by a garrison of some 3500 men under the Marquis de Montcalm; Abercromby's larger forces stormed these lines unsuccessfully, suffering heavy casualties before the attack was broken off.

        A map of the Peruvian port city of Callao, prepared by the English cartographer Thomas Jeffreys (c. 1719-1771), who was the geographer to George III. This map was originally published in a magazine, which has resulted in several folds (none of which show significant evidence of wear). Light age toning and some surface soiling in the left hand margin. Matted and framed; not examined out of frame.

Engraved map with original handcolor in part. London, Sayer & Bennett, (1776). 2 Parts Joined, (21 3/4 x 50 inches sheets). Jeffery’s map is the earliest obtainable large format map to treat Florida and Gulf Coast region with such remarkable detail, including soundings and rhumb lines. The map identifies the trade routes then being utilized by the English, Spanish, and other maritime sea powers, along the gulf coast, past the Florida Keys and through the Channel separating Florida from the Bahamas.

London, Sayer & Bennett, (1776). 54 x 21 1/2 inches. Final state of one of the most influential and comprehensive maps of the region published during the American Revolution. The settlements in New York are almost entirely confined to the banks of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. The unexplored Adirondack County is left entirely blank. Insets of New York City, the mouth of the Hudson & Amboy shown.

        Course of the River Mississipi, from the Balise to Fort Chartes; Taken on an Expedition to the Illinois, in the latter end of the Year 1765. By Lieut. J. Ross. Thomas Jeffreys (c. 1719 – 1771). Engraved map with original handcolor in part. London, Sayer & Bennett, (1776). 46 x 21 1/2 inches sheet. Ross’ map of the Mississippi was the first official English survey of the Lower Mississippi, and one of the most historically significant American maps, delineating the British gains from France in the French and Indian War and later establishing the future western boundary of the new United States. The map opened the area to settlement from the east and defined the western limits of the American colonies.

Braddock Mead (c.1688 - 1757). Thomas Jeffreys (c. 1719 – 1771). Engraved map with original handcolor in part. London, Sayer & Bennett, (1776). 2 parts (each approx. 21 1/2 x 40 1/2 inches). Braddock Mead’s map of New England is generally considered the single most important and influential map of New England published during the British Colonial period. First issued in 1755, the map provided the largest-scale and most detailed and accurate portrait of the region to date. Its importance was such that it was revised and reissued well into the 1790s, and over this period it served as a primary source for leading European and American mapmakers.

Engraved map with original handcolor in part. London, Sayer & Bennett, (1776). 42 x 51 1/2 inches sheet, 38 1/2 x 57 inches framed. Though originally published in 1751, the issue of 1775, of which this is a fine example, was published for Thomas Jefferys’ important America Atlas, which contained examples of the many great maps of the American colonies that resulted from the mid-century mapping undertaken by the British.

The most active and celebrated English map-maker, engraver and publisher, Jefferys gave more attention than any other British cartographer to the colonies in North America. The maps by Jefferys represent the pinnacle of eighteenth century cartographic progress and his skill and accuracy were most beauitfully displayed in The West India Atlas.
