Living amidst Nature is one elixir of happiness with free water and the bounty of Nature at one's disposal, what with the bulwark of the mountain affording spiritual solace and protection, as a symbolic and decorative form. Like the fabled Mount Meru, the spiritual centre of the universe and in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology, the abodes of gods, and âwhich stabilizes the universe, holding sky and earth in place.â (Soul, Spirit and Mountain: Preoccupations of Contemporary Indonesian Painters, by Astri Wright, Oxford University Press, USA, 1994). The two women clad in batik sarong are on terra firma but can be seen as nurturers against the mountain backdrop, whether they be friends or family. Here, the artist J. Anu is seen at his symbolic and romantic best rather than his usual satiric, ironic and even provocative thrusts. Artist, curator (Galeri Petronas), journalist (The Star) and lawyer - J. Anu is certainly one of the significant contemporary artists depicting figures often in trenchant socio-political narratives, mostly referencing his Indian origin. Devi At Rest has that lazy, malingering afternoon feel but with a decidedly sensual ring. That is Anurendra Jegadeva, or simply J. Anu, the absolute maharaja of the visual language. J. Anu has certainly become one of the most refreshing artists from the Malaysian art scene, with subtle yet critical representations of his Sri Lankan Tamil heritage — culture and tradition, politics, social conventions and changes. He has raised the attention of many since his first solo at the Civic Centre in Petaling Jaya in 1992. A series of provocative narratives of ‘painted stories’ followed thereafter highlighting social commentaries such as identity and culture, liberation theology in Sri Lanka, women and migrant condition. Multimedia, assemblages, installations, paintings or in accordion folders, J. Anu uses media to dramatise his subject and message. In the essay, The Melancholy! The Melancholy!, Eddin Khoo wrote: His (J. Anu’s) remains, essentially, an aesthetic sensibility conditioned by melancholy — a painter of nostalgia and the sentimental — offering a distinctive insight into the trappings, contradictions, conflicts, even complacency, that assail when, as in Malaysia, all worlds collide. The unique Malaysian national drink, teh-tarik, a concoction of black tea mixed with condensed milk and ‘pulled’ for the added zing and flavour, frothy top et al, is a daily ritual among Malaysians of various races from all walks of life. At make-shift roadside stalls and mamak (Indian-Muslim) restaurants, they are lively congregation points any time of the day. The figures, ordinary heroes, enjoying the cuppa or in a separate ‘kitchen’ window, are rendered in ambiguous overlapping shapes like anatomical models in an unusual obfuscation play of lines and colour tones. In the book, Sacred Altars (page 19), the scholar June Yap noted in Witness This: The Works of Anurendra Jegadeva: “In Anurendra’s sense of place that straddles continents, histories and cultures, there are many heroes – even common ones, and as many altars to worship them at. At the same time… it almost seems it is less specific heroes than the heroic that XXXX that is the ability (or perhaps destiny) to rise above the hoi polloi, to carve out a definitive history, one that is worthy of remembrance.” From a rather tame first solo at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre in 1992, Anurendra Jegadeva has been breathlessly consistent and trenchant in his works that delve into the Indian Condition, partly autobiographical. He uses figures in paintings, installations or text forms, to rail against socio-political problems. Trained in Law and Fine Art, he had a spell as a journalist among other jobs, and from 2007-2010 was senior curator with Galeri Petronas. He has been invited to take part in the Singapore Biennale. J. Anu is among the four Malaysian artists featured at the national pavilion in the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale in Venice, Italy.

Anurendra Jegadeva, or popularly known as J. Anu, has upped the ante since his first solo at the Civic Centre, Petaling Jaya in 1992. What followed was a series of provocative narratives of ‘painted stories’ in his solo exhibitions about the Indian condition and culture, liberation theology in Sri Lanka, women and migrant issues. His recent exhibition, Finding Graceland, New Landscapes from the Great State of Perak (2011) saw him tackling huge canvases with the play of history and memory. This early 1996 work captures a Menora dancer from Kelantan bedecked in full traditional costumes complete with long sharp fingernail stubs. The dance is a male preserve with even the female roles played by males. A basic feature of Menora dancing involves an enactment of slow rhythmic movements of legs, arms and fingers. In this oil painting, a dancer is reproduced in the midst of executing a motion. With loose expressive strokes of the brush, J. Anu manages to convey a sense of steady movement, while his use of bold and striking colour makes the figure come alive. Painted for the exhibition Dance, Rhythm & Motion, Anu visited Kelantan to experience this particular style of dance. The artwork demonstrates Anu’s interest in illustrating his observations on tradition and culture through his own unique perspective. J. Anu is a multi-talented artist with 20 years experience as an art journalist who also holds law degree. He is also known as an art-critic and curator, with a stint at Galeri Petronas. Starting with a Foundation in Art and Design at the Oxford Polytechnic (1986), he followed up his Doctoral studies in Art Theory and Practice in London, and a Masters of Fine Art at Monash University in Melbourne, where he spent seven years. Anu has participated in art exhibitions since 1996, his paintings having graced the walls of the National Art Gallery, Galeri Petronas, Rimbun Dahan, Valentine Willie Fine Art and Wei-Ling Gallery. He has taken part in group shows abroad such as Experiences at Hill-Smith Fine Art in Adelaide, Australia (1999), 18@8: Contemporary Artists from Malaysia & Beyond, a collaborative exhibition between Wei-Ling Gallery and Amin Gulgee Gallery in Karachi, Pakistan (2006), as well as participating in China International Gallery Exposition at the China World Trade Centre in 2008. He is a sought after and prolific artist. His solo exhibitions include Strange Paradise - Meditations on Empire, the Gods and Mulligatawny Soup (2011), Finding Graceland (2011) and My God is My Truck (2010). In 2014, his works were presented in the form of a solo show titled MA-NA-VA-REH – Love and Loss in the Time of the Great Debate at Art Stage Singapore.
