Paul Jenkins Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1923 - d. 2012

(b Kansas City, Missouri, 1923) American painter. Under the G.I. Bill, Paul Jenkins attended the Art Students League in New York from 1948-52, during which time he studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor. Jenkins' pictorial universe consists of streaks of color that awaken associations. He produced his first picture with diluted paints in 1951; later they were executed as pour pictures. The layers of pigment covering the picture supports are whisper-thin. Jenkins' handling is intuitive yet informed by philosophy. He is receptive to sources of inspiration provided by the manifold impressions he has of his immediate surroundings. His aesthetic experiments usually involve the prismatic colors of the rainbow. However, Jenkins also works up the impressions he has received on his extensive travels. In such cases, it is the distinctive color of a particular place that he finds most fascinating. Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) American, Hand-Signed Abstract Lithograph

    Est: $600 - $1,200

Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) American, Hand-Signed Abstract Lithograph. Title: "Seeing Voices 3." 1965. Signed lower right in pencil. Various labels on back of frame.  Overall Size: 17 7/8 x 13 7/8 in.  Sight Size: 14 1/2 x 10 in.  #5433 .  William Paul Jenkins (better known by simply his middle and last name) was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 12th, 1923. As a boy he met both Thomas Hart Benton and Frank Lloyd Wright, the latter of whom suggested he should pursue a career in agriculture, rather than art. In his teens Jenkins worked as a molder and sculptor in a ceramics factory, learning about color variations and form, and he attended the Kansas City Art Institute when he was just 14. After graduating in 1942 he decided to enlist in the U.S. Naval Air Corps, and upon his discharge in 1945 he went to New York City to study at the Art Students League. He continued to take classes and experiment with various styles and mediums through 1952, heavily influenced by Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor and becoming one of the pivotal Abstract Expressionists of the blossoming New York School. In 1953 he and his first wife, Esther Ebenhoe, relocated with their daughter Hilarie to Paris so he could study classical art, and he spent most of the rest of his life alternating between there and New York City, with his first solo exhibition at Studio Paul Facchetti on the rue de Lille in 1954. With his second wife, the artist Alice Baber, he was instrumental in the development of the American Artists Center (now the American Center for Art and Culture), where exhibitions, performances, concerts and more helped influence the development of Postmodern art. In Europe he explored lithography as well as playwriting, and his process of layering pigment, modeled after the works of Wolfgang Wols and Mark Tobey, was the subject of a short documentary in Italy in 1966. While immersed in the writings of Jung, Goethe, and Kant he shifted from working in oil on canvas to acrylic, and preferred to paint using an ivory knife rather than a brush. In the 1970s he returned to sculpture, working with limestone and bronze, and frequently hosted parties at his studio loft near Union Square, exchanging art and ideas with Robert Motherwell, Mernice Abbott, and Paloma Picasso. His first retrospective showings were at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1971 and ‘72, respectively. In 1978 his paintings appeared in the Paul Mazursky film “An Unmarried Woman,” gaining further notoriety when it was nominated for an Academy Award. In 1986 he became a teacher at the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Arts, and by the 1990s his acrylics, watercolors, and sculpture installations around the world had made him one of the most popular artists in Europe. He and his third wife, Suzanne Donnelly, spent most of his final years compiling his older works into collections and writing his autobiography. He continued to make new art right up until his death on June 9th, 2012 after a prolonged illness, and his works are now in private and public collections all over the globe, including the Crocker Art Museum, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and over 5,000 pieces in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution along with his personal papers. His influence on the art world was immense, and he is acknowledged as one of the key developers of both the American Lyrical Abstraction and French Tachisme styles.

Paul Jenkins Phenomena of Amber. 1960. Aquarell auf Karton. 16,2 x 38,7 cm. Signiert, datiert und bezeichnet. Verso zusätzlich mit Bleistiftannotat. Ecken kaum merklich angestoßen. Verso und recto mit Atelierspuren. Die Farben leuchtend. Amerikanische Moderne Jenkins, Paul Phenomena of Amber. 1960. Aquarell auf Karton. 16,2 x 38,7 cm. Watercolour on cardboard. Signed, dated and inscribed. With additional pencil annotation verso. Corners barely noticeably bumped. Verso and recto with studio traces. The colours luminous. In 1959 and 1960, Jenkins devoted himself to Goethe's and Kant's works. Goethe's colour theories influenced him by prefixing the titles of his works with the word 'Phenomena'. This was followed by a key word or a sentence. Impressive tachist composition in which Jenkins experiments with the blue values of sky blue, cobalt blue and indigo blue and creates a lyrical meditation on colour space.
