Joseph Jicha Austria / Hungary / Ohio, (1901 - 1960) Rhyolite, Nevada Watercolor on paper Signed and titled lower left. Biography from the Archives of askART: Joseph Jicha, "commercial artist and watercolorist, was born in Austria-Hungary to Rudolph and Helen (Remesch) Jicha, and came to Cleveland with his family as an infant. His father was a skilled coppersmith who worked decorations for the Cleveland Institute of Art. He apprenticed 13-year-old Joseph to sculptor Walter Sinz at the Institute. As a student, Jicha was a member of the Kokoon Arts Club. The Cleveland Community Fund commissioned him to design a poster for its campaign in 1928. In 1929, Jicha won the international Frank Logan Medal at the Chicago Art Institute for painting. He believed his commercial work helped him as a painter, because of the careful planning of design work. Jicha worked for Fawn Art and Creative Artists on advertisements for the Hotel Statler, Sherwin Williams Company., and Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co. His work appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and Life magazine; he won the Art Director's Show in New York City in 1936; and he exhibited paintings at Korner & Wood (1938) and Hotel Alcazar (1941). His paintings were described by critics as having great line strength and composition, with blazing colors. Jicha also exhibited in 1941 by invitation at the National Watercolor Show in San Diego. His work is in the San Diego Museum and the Mexico Natl. Museum. He taught summer school at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1950. Two years later, Jicha and his wife, the former Cora Smith Ingalis, whom he married in September 1904, traveled across America to paint for a year. The couple had no children. Jicha died in Cleveland and was buried in Olmsted Falls." Source: The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, http://ech.cwru.edu/ech-cgi/article.pl?id=JJW

Artist: JOSEPH W. JICHA (1901-1960) Size: 22 7/8 x 37 1/8 in./58.2 x 94.4 cm The Crane-Howard Litho Co. A Native American, in an ecstatic trance, raises the spirits of the dead from a sacred fire while the throng revels in the background. This was the theme of 1928's gala ball for the Kokoon Arts Club, a scandalous avant-garde arts society in Cleveland created for lithographers with a sense of the outré. This invitation poster is addressed to Oscar E. Liebner, a watercolorist and veteran of Cleveland's arts circles, who was noted in the American Art News of 1914 as a member of the Cleveland Arts Club. (Art Deco)

Artist: JOSEPH W. JICHA (1901-1960) Size: 24 3/8 x 33 3/4 in./62 x 86 cm Otis Litho, Cleveland The masked spirits of Earth, fire, and foliage fall like superheroes sliding on lightning-bolts to the summit of a lava mountain: "13th Descent," they announce: "Deity Agni • Son of Fire • With the Spirit of Carnival • Through Myriad Cycles of Color • Masonic Hall • February 5th, 1926." The Kokoon Arts Club of Cleveland, Ohio leaves you this self-mailer, unaddressed: it is meant for you: "You are invited to sense their ethereal presence." Joseph W. Jicha, who illustrated a great many of the Kokoon Arts Club's invitations and announcements, studied art in Cleveland and became a member of the city's notorious Kokoon. Later, his great Art Deco landscapes and figure studies were included in major exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and venues in New York, Philadelphia and Texas. Midas / Crystal Slipper Ballroom. 1927

      Est: $1,400 - $1,700

Artist: JOSEPH W. JICHA (1901-1960) Size: 37 3/4 x 25 in./96 x 63.6 cm Continental Litho, Cleveland "Midas • Whatsoever he Touches Might be Gold • Over this Fourteenth Cycle He will Hover." Thus it is announced, to the Kokoon Arts Club for January, 1927, their Grand Ball: and Night, descending with a cape of stars, will touch the Bohemian denizens of Cleveland's finest dance floor – Cubists, as they pull shapes – and they will be golden for that night and everlasting. This, and the following Lot, are self-mailer invitations for the grandest event of the strangest society ever to exist in Cleveland. In the 1920s, the city was America's center of the lithographic trade: bursting with artists, lithographers, and draftsmen from Berlin and Eastern Europe. They were almost exclusively tasked with producing invariable, quick-dash posters for throwaway Hollywood movies – and they were bored. They'd been to Paris, to Prague, to Berlin. Modernism and Art Deco were popping everywhere. They made it pop here. Their lavish, decadent, scandalous, occasionally banned and thoroughly Bohemian parties were just the tip of a movement dedicated to avant-garde art and the spirit of the outsider. "For artists who spent their days making advertisements and posters, the Kokoon Club provided a venue for subverting the traditional expectations of pictorial art. Their clubhouse became the epicenter of the true Bohemian lifestyle in Cleveland, and the name of the club became known for radical art," reads one retrospective from 2004. This particular mailer is addressed in crayon to a Mr. & Mrs. Myson Fletscher, who are lost to history. (Art Deco, Event)
