LUIS JIMENEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1845 - Pontoise, France, 1928). Untitled. Watercolor on paper. Presents damages in the frame. Signed and located in the lower right area. Measurements: 20 x 30 cm; 39 x 49 cm (frame). Luis Jiménez Aranda initiates his formation of the hand of his brothers José and Manuel. Then he continued his studies in the Academy of Fine Arts Santa Isabel de Hungría of Seville, where he had Eduardo Cano de la Peña as his teacher. In 1867 he went to Rome to broaden his knowledge, and in 1876 he settled in Pontoise, near Paris, finally becoming a French citizen. Throughout his career he took part in various official exhibitions both in France and Spain, and was also awarded a prize at the Universal Exposition in Chicago (1893). He also took part in the Paris Salons and participated in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he obtained an honorable mention in 1864 and first medal in 1892, with the work "La visita del médico". This same canvas earned him the great medal of honor at the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1889. He specialized in the historical genre, although he also made costumbrist works, always with a veristic style where the importance of the drawing stands out, as a result of the influence of his brother José. Luis Jiménez Aranda is represented in the Prado Museum, the Meadows Museum of the Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, among other institutions, as well as in various private collections.

      Est: €3,000 - €3,500

LUIS JIMÉNEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1845 - Pontoise, France, 1928). "Gentleman. Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right area. Measurements: 20 x 13 cm; 43 x 25 cm (frame). José Jiménez Aranda, brother of Luis and Manuel Jiménez Aranda, was a Spanish painter and illustrator who began his training with Manuel Cabral and Eduardo Cano de la Peña. His talent for drawing helped him to gain admission to the Santa Isabel de Hungría Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Seville in 1851. In 1868 he was in Madrid, where he learned in the Prado Museum from the best masters, feeling a special predilection for Goya and Velázquez. In 1867 he was in Jerez de la Frontera working as a restorer and designer of stained-glass windows and, four years later, he managed to go to Rome, where he met Mariano Fortuny. He returned four years later. Between 1881 and 1890 he lived in Paris, where he produced a series of works, most notably those set in the 18th century, which were greatly influenced by Fortuny, due to the success they brought him. When he returned to Madrid, he devoted himself to works with everyday themes but with a more costumbrist air. In 1892 he returned to Seville, where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts until his death, in turn teaching leading figures such as Eugenio Hermoso, Manuel González Santos, etc., and frequenting the so-called "landscape circle of Alcalá de Guadaira" towards the end of the 19th century. Although his best-known works are the scenes inspired by 17th-century art, he also dealt with religious themes and landscapes. His work received numerous awards during his lifetime (Honourable Mention at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1864 and 1866; First Medal at the 1890 Exhibition, Medal of Honour at the Munich International Exhibition of 1883...), and is held in important private collections and institutions such as the Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, etc.

Provenance: - Swiss private collection. - Koller auction, Zurich, 20.9.2013, Lot 3201. - Swiss private collection. --------------- LUIS JIMÉNEZ Y ARANDA (Sevilla 1845–1928 Pontoise) Das Violinkonzert. 1880. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten links signiert, bezeichnet und datiert: Luis Jimenez. Paris 1880. 68,5 × 120 cm. Provenienz: - Schweizer Privatbesitz. - Auktion Koller, Zürich, 20.9.2013, Los 3201. - Schweizer Privatbesitz.

Luis Jiménez y Aranda (1845-1928), Painting 'Cherry Picking'

      Est: €8,000 - €10,000

Oil on canvas France, Pontoise, around 1890 Luis Jiménez y Aranda (1845-1928) - Spanish painter Signed lower right: 'Luis Jiménez - Pontoise' Measurements in frame: 76 x 57.5 cm Good condition Provenance: from a Southern German private collection The paintings showing farm girls in Pontoise count among the most sought after by Luis Jiménez y Aranda; the auction record for such an artwork stands at 140,000 Euros. This fine oil painting by the Spanish painter Luis Jiménez y Aranda shows a young girl picking cherries. On a slightly sloping meadow, with a view of a hilly landscape in the background, there is a great cherry tree yielding plenty fruit. The young girl is wearing a traditional costume and has bent one of the lower branches towards her. Two baskets filled with already picked cherries stand ready at her side and a third one at her feet is also almost full. Behind the tree there is a ladder leaning against its trunk, where a second girl is also picking cherries. All that can be seen of her is a heavy shoe and a blue-brown skirt, wheras the rest is veiled by the tree's leaves and fruit. Luis Jiménez was especially successful as a historical painter, but also followed the Spanish art movement of the Costumbrismo, which intended to show the customs and traditions of the people. As such, he was probably as close to French realism as he was to impressionism - and 'Cherry Picking' shows influences from all these movements. The painting 'Cherry Picking' by Louis Jiménez Aranda is in good condition. The colour is protected by a varnish and shows a bit craquelure as well as some traces of framing. The painting is signed in the lower right: 'Luis Jiménez - Pontoise'. It measures 76 x 57.4 cm in its frame and 65 x 46 without it. The recent frame shows signs of wear, especially at the corners. Louis Jiménez Aranda (1845-1928) Louis Jiménez Aranda was born in Sevilla to a family of artists. He took painting lessons from his older brother José Jiménez y Aranda (1837-1903) before he studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Sevilla, like before his brother had. After a short stay in Rome, Louis Jiménez Aranda moved to Pontoise near Paris and took on French citizenship. He was already exhibiting his artworks at the Salon de Paris when he took part at the World Fair in Paris and Chicago. At the same time, he was also exhibited at national Spanish exhibitions and received, amongst other awards, the 1892 gold medal for the painting La visita del médico . He focused mainly on historical painting but was also part of the so-called Costumbrismo movement, which sought to depict the customs and traditions of society in a realistic way. Luis was influenced by his elder brother for parts of his life, but never copied him.
